1. A Sudden Guest

1A Sudden Guest

“Mmm! It’s so yummy!” I said with a mouth full of karaage-style fried chicken. We’d finished morning classes, and it was lunchtime.

All my classmates had put their desks together to make little tables.

“You know, Asuka, I think you’re at your happiest when you’re eating your packed lunch,” Misaki said, sitting across from me with a look of disbelief on her face.

“I mean, duh! I’m exhausted after having to deal with those numbers and read in a cryptic language that isn’t Japanese…”

“It’s just math and English,” Kei murmured to himself.

And those two classes are the big problems for me!

I turned around and shot a glare at Kei, who was eating behind me.

He never had lunch with us. I’d invited him a few times, but I guess he wanted to use the break for reading. He was always reading something really complicated while he ate.

Look at him. He’s acting so distant, like usual. You’d think he could stop studying for a second to enjoy some food.

I shrugged and returned my attention to my own table.

My bento lunch box for the day was chicken, rice with mixed beef and burdock, an omelet with carrot bits, and a colorful salad made from lettuce and tomato slices.

I had to stop myself from drooling all over everything when I opened it up.

Nice one, Dad! Another perfect lunch!

Once I was done with the chicken, I was about to dig into the omelet when…

“Uh? Did you notice the hallway sure is quiet today?” Yuzuki said, turning her head in that direction.

Hmm? She’s right… The hallway is usually louder. There’s always someone out there making noise during lunch…

What’s going on? Did something happen?

Now I was interested. I got up and headed over to the door to peer out.

“Is that who I think it is?”

“Yeah…”

There were a bunch of students chattering quietly among themselves. They were all looking in the same direction, so I followed their eyes to see what all the fuss was about.

Hmm?

There was a girl wearing her school uniform walking straight down the center of the hallway. Her hair was done in a short bob, and she was looking forward with sharp eyes. She was slender, about my height, and had a grown-up vibe.

Not only that, but she also didn’t seem to mind all the attention. She was walking with so much confidence that the other students seemed to move out of the way for her.

Whoa, she’s kinda cool!

There was something else attention-grabbing about her—her uniform. She was dressed like a high schooler in the middle school building.

This was probably why everyone was being so quiet. The high school was in an entirely different building than the middle school, so she’d come quite a ways to get here. We almost never saw the big kids in our building.

I watched as she walked in my direction, until she stopped right in front of me.

Uh?! Why’d you stop?!

She was standing up tall and straight—even the way she stood was different from the regular kids.

Is this what they mean when they say someone has an aura to them?

I looked up a bit at her.

Huh? I’m starting to get nervous.

Her light-brown eyes met mine, and I felt like I was getting sucked into them.

“Hey. Are you in this class?” she asked.

“Um, uh, yes,” I said awkwardly.

“I heard there was a girl named Asuka Kouzuki in this class. Is she in today?”

Huh? Y-you mean me?!

I blinked a few times while I stared at the older girl.

I don’t think I recognize her… We’ve definitely never met before.

“Wait… Are you her? Are you Asuka Kouzuki?”

She must’ve realized what I was thinking from my reaction.

“Yes, I am… What do you—?”

Before I could finish my sentence, she latched on to me with a hug.

Wagh! What the heck?!

“I’m Rio Kiyose, a second-year in high school and head of the Phantom Thief club. I’ve been wanting to meet you!” she said energetically. Her eyes were even more intense than before.

Wait…did she just say, “Phantom Thief club”? Does our school even have one of those?!

She didn’t figure out that I was Phantom Thief Red and come here to confront me about it, did she?

Image - 05

My heart started racing.

What will I do if someone figures out my true identity?

Rio was smiling at me and seemed gentle enough. It didn’t look like she was here to interrogate me, at least.

“So I heard you were there for the Sky Towers incident and during the recent cruise ship hijacking.”

Uh? The Sky Towers incident? Cruise ship hijacking?

I wasn’t quite following her. And what did she mean that she “heard”?

“And since I consider myself this school’s—no, Japan’s—biggest Phantom Thief Red fan, I wanted to ask you about it!” Rio’s voice was so loud that everyone could hear her.

D-did she say she’s Phantom Thief Red’s biggest fan?!

Phantom thieves have fans?! What’s that even supposed to mean?!

“I’m sure you know who Phantom Thief Red is, right? He may be a phantom thief, but it’s not like he steals for no reason. He’s a modern-day Robin Hood who takes back valuable diamonds and pictures and returns them to their rightful owners without getting caught by the police. Have you ever heard of someone so heroic?! Not me, that’s for sure! There’s nobody like Red! I have so much respect for him.”

Rio was holding out both of her arms as she went on a passionate rant.

………

Uh… How should I respond to this?

It wasn’t just me, either—my classmates were staring blankly, too.

Sounds like the Phantom Thief club is for people who like phantom thieves.

“Whaddaya think? You know where I’m coming from, right? I can break it down for you more if you need me to…”

“Oh, no! I think I get it! I’m curious how you knew about the incident at the Sky Towers and the cruise hijacking, though. Neither of those were picked up by the news.”

“From a friend in the drama club. When she first told me, I wasn’t sure I could believe her. I mean, it’s Hibiki Shirasato we’re talkin’ about here. I heard you’re friends with him?”

Right… Hibiki mentioned it in the drama club the other day.

Now I get why he doesn’t know about Kei, though.

Hmm, this is a problem. Not only did everyone in the drama club hear about the incidents, but I also don’t really have anything I can share, either.

It’s not like I can tell her I teamed up with Hibiki to help save the hostages.

“So during the case at the Sky Towers…”

Her eyes sparkling, Rio began to bring up a new topic.

S-stop right there!

I tried to slow Rio down, but my surroundings caught my attention.

Is it just me, or is everybody watching us right now?

A high schooler being in the building was strange enough as it was, so it looked like everyone wanted to see what was up.

I was struggling to find an answer for her, when…

“What are you doing in the hallway, Kouzuki? Not causing another ruckus, are we?”

A calm voice carried through the crowd from behind me.

I know who that is!

And I was right: It was President Shiori, or the Ice Queen, as the school lovingly calls her.

Maybe she can get me out of this.

“Oh, hey, Shiori. What’s up?” Rio said to President Shiori.

Uh?

“Hello to you, too, Kiyose,” President Shiori responded, sounding uncharacteristically nervous.

“W-wait, do you two know each other?!”

“Yes, we do. When I was a first-year student, Kiyose was the student body president for the middle school.”

“Whaaaaaat?! So you were the middle school’s student body president two years ago?”

“Huh, has it been that long? I’ll have you know that even the high schoolers talk about Shiori’s good work as president, and it always makes me happy to hear it.”

“Really? Thank you!”

President Shiori, who was usually cool, calm, and collected, seemed a bit bashful.

I’d never seen her with that expression before… I was almost surprised—very surprised, actually. I didn’t know President Shiori could even feel bashful. Maybe Rio was someone she looked up to?

“So you’re here to see Kouzuki?” Shiori asked.

“Yup. I wanted to ask her—”

Rio began to explain herself, when a teacher appeared down the hall. It was Mr. Sakai, a math teacher who was quick to get angry. He was always lecturing somebody, and his speeches were known to run on and on and on. Angering him was guaranteed to cost you at least fifteen minutes of your day. He’s one of my least favorite teachers.

He looked at Rio and walked this way. He was probably going to tell her to go back to the high school. She wasn’t supposed to be here without a special reason to come.

Hmm… This situation could take a bad turn…

“Aw, man! I hate having to listen to that teacher’s lectures,” Rio said, playfully sticking her tongue out. “I’ll come back another time, Asuka.” She then turned around and darted away down the hall.

“Hey, you. Wait!”

And just like I expected, Mr. Sakai quickly followed after her. He was the type who needed to say his piece before he could let something go.

“Mr. Sakai, please don’t run in the hallways,” President Shiori said without missing a beat, and Mr. Sakai turned to face us.

“Oh, Orihara. What was Kiyose doing here from the high school?”

“She came to return a lost item she found.” President Shiori didn’t bat an eye at the teacher.

“Oh, I see… All right, I’ll take your word for it,” Mr. Sakai said with a shrug before getting on with his day.

“Whoa… Mr. Sakai listened to you and left you alone in three seconds! I feel like I just saw a miracle.”

“It’s because I’m the student body president. You’d be able to communicate with the teachers like this, too, if you decided to run.”

“Uh-uh! No way! I could never be president!”

“I didn’t think I could at first, either, but it’s definitely possible… Though, there is a lot you need to learn first.”

That’s the hard part.

“You know, Kiyose’s work as the president is why I’m able to talk to Mr. Sakai like that. It’s why our school lets students be a little more individual, too.”

Oh?

I only knew the school for what it was when I joined it, so I’d assumed it was always like this.

“When I started out here in middle school, the teachers were in charge of making all the rules. There were strict rules on skirt lengths and hairstyles for girls.”

“What?! You had to have a certain hairstyle to go here?!”

“But it was Kiyose who changed that. Take the culture festival, for example. It was fun for us students to be able to decide what we wanted to do, right?”

“Yeah! Getting all the different booths ready for the event was super fun for everyone!”

“When it comes to things like security and student safety, the administration still plays a significant role, but I feel like our school is more lenient in certain areas, especially when compared with other schools. The same goes for our club activities.”

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. That’s true. They even let us start eating lunch early, too. (*Author’s note: They do not do this.) And it was all thanks to Kiyose…

“Whatever she does, she goes all in. She had the support of the entire student body behind her and was amazing when it came to organizing events and leading people. So I knew I could follow her. Sometimes, she went a little overboard, but that’s what the rest of us were there for.”

There was a gentleness in President Shiori’s eyes as she explained.

“Is she the reason you also wanted to become student body president?”

“She is. I wanted to lead my classmates like she led us, but it’s not as easy as she made it look.”

What do you mean?! You’re an amazing class president! We all trust you, and in just three seconds, you even convinced old Mr. Sakai to stop before he started lecturing us! That’s not something many of us can do!

“That’s nice to hear, but the real issue is a certain somebody who likes to cause trouble,” she said, staring straight at me.

Ah-ha-ha…

It wasn’t like I was trying to make problems, but sometimes they just happen. I’ll be more careful…

Krrrr

Huh?

I felt my foot nudge something and looked down to find a somewhat expensive-looking pen rolling across the ground.

“Someone must’ve dropped this.” I bent over and picked it up. It was a shiny black pen with a fancy golden tip and clip.

This looks expensive.

There wasn’t anyone in our class who used a pen like this—not that I’d ever seen before, at least.

Image - 06

“That’s Kiyose’s fountain pen. I think it’s her favorite, because she always has it on her, and I’ve seen her use it a few times,” President Shiori said, taking the, uh, “fountain” pen from me.

“We’d better go give it back to her, then!”

“Lunch is over, so I’ll have to wait until after school… Ah, no, there’s a student council meeting I need to go to today,” President Shiori muttered to herself, looking a little worried.

“Then maybe I should go. If it’s really that important, she’ll probably want to find it sooner rather than later.”

“Are you sure?”

“Of course! I want to learn a little bit more about the Phantom Thief club she was talking about anyway.”

“All right. It’d help if you could do that for me. You can find her at…”

President Shiori told me everything I needed to know before leaving.

Thinking about it, it would be my first time visiting the high school building when it wasn’t decorated for the culture festival.

I wonder what the high school is like. The same goes for the Phantom Thief club—I can’t wait!

2. To the Phantom Thief Club!

2To the Phantom Thief Club!

Class was over for the day, and I was walking through the halls of the high school building. The gates to the middle school and the high school were separated, facing each other about three hundred feet apart. That was why whenever you wanted to get to the high school, you had to leave the middle school grounds, walk outside, then enter through the high school front gate.

Walking it for the first time made me realize that it was a long way from the high school’s front gate to the actual building. This walk is gonna be so painful when I’m running late.

Not that it matters if you’re on time…

“She said…the clubroom for the Phantom Thief club was in a separate building.”

According to President Shiori, Rio would be in the clubroom after school.

The club itself was in the building with the music and art classrooms, separate from where the classrooms were. I’d gone to this spot during the culture festival, so I had a general idea of how to get there.

There should be a separate path from the front gate. Although…

As I walked through the school courtyard, I could feel the glances of my senior alumni peeking over at me.

Looks like this school uniform makes me stick out like a sore thumb. I actually might be starting to get a little nervous…

I arrived at the building, and there was a floor guide at the entrance. It must’ve been there for new students to quickly figure out where they wanted to go.

The guide included a floor map with each of the rooms and club names. The literary club, the home economics club, the photography club, the drama club, the culinary arts club, the computer club, the mystery research club…

Many of these clubs did something for the culture festival. I didn’t notice the Phantom Thief club back then, though.

Oh! There it is!

As I worked my way through the map, I found a room with PHANTOM THIEF CLUB written on it. It was on the second floor.

I went up the stairs and stood in front of the club entrance. There was only one door to the classroom, so it must’ve been a smaller one.

I could hear voices coming from the inside. I wasn’t sure if any of them belonged to Rio, but there were people there.

Knock, knock.

I knocked on the door.

“Yes!”

I heard an answer shortly before the door opened from the other side.

It was Rio, and her face brightened up the second she saw it was me.

“Asuka!” She held out both hands and tried to hug me.

“Wh-whoa! Hold on!”

Panicking, I held out both hands to push her back.

Did she just try to hug me? Is that a thing she does? I’m definitely not used to that.

“C’mon! Come inside.”

Before I could get my bearings, Rio grabbed my arms and pulled me into the clubroom.

“Waaagh!” I stumbled after her.

There was a brown wooden table in the middle of the room with metal folding chairs surrounding it. There, two boys were sitting at the table. Both of them were big and tall. The room seemed pretty chill, and the students seemed comfortable.

Wow…

They looked like adults.

“A guest? That’s unusual,” one of the boys said.

He had short hair, broad shoulders, and a dark suntan. I could tell from his wrists and neck that he was muscular. He must be into some kind of sport.

“She’s the girl I was telling you about yesterday, Daiki. The middle schooler who was at the Sky Towers.”

“Ah, you did mention something about that.”

Okay, so the boy was named Daiki. He nodded, seeming to recall what Rio had told him.

“Your terrible memory can be astounding,” the other boy said. He was slender, with long, pin-straight hair that fell just above his shoulders. His sharp eyes, framed by glasses, gave him a more reserved appearance.

“He’s right, Daiki. Sometimes, I wonder if you’re even listening to me,” Rio said with annoyance before looking at me. “Let me introduce these two. The tall one is Daiki Sawahashi. He’s practically an animal with how athletic he is—every sports club is trying to recruit him. And this guy in glasses is Kento Okihara. He’s a bit of an eccentric—one of the top students in the high school, always ranking in the top three, and full of random trivia you’d never learn in class. We’ve been friends since middle school.”

The two shrugged at their introductions, but Rio ignored their reactions and turned to me.

“And this girl is Asuka Kouzuki, a middle school student who was at not only the Sky Towers incident but also the hijacking of the Flower Song. She’s our highly anticipated new club member!”

Image - 07

Um?

Did she say, “new club member”?

“Good to meetcha.”

“Yes, nice to meet you…”

Daiki and Kento addressed me one after the other, each giving small nods.

“Nice to meet you both, too… Er, wait! I didn’t come here to join!” I almost nodded back but then shook my head instead.

“Oh, really?” Rio said with a look of suspicion.

Whew, that was close. I almost got dragged into her club.

I glanced at Daiki and Kento, whose shoulders were bouncing up and down as they snickered quietly to themselves.

You guys! You were both in on it the entire time, huh?!

“Sorry, sorry. We noticed you didn’t mention anything about joining the club. It was just Rio getting ahead of herself,” Kento said, bringing the chuckles to an end.

“You know what? You’re right. So what brings you here?” Rio asked, her head tilted to the side.

“I came to give this back to you.” I took out her fountain pen.

“Oh! Ah, I did lose it!” Rio said as she checked her uniform pocket. She hadn’t even realized it was missing yet. “Thanks! This was a gift from my dad, so it’s very special to me.”

I handed it over, and she received it with a look of relief.

Welp! All done here! I’m just gonna go now.

“Hold on. Seeing as you came all the way here, do you wanna get a tour of the clubroom?”

“Is that okay?”

There was something in the room that caught my eye as soon as I entered—some writing on the wall.

“Of course!” Rio said, grabbing me by the arm and ushering me over to the wall.

“Whoa! What is the?”

My mouth dropped open at what I saw.

On the wall was a giant piece of paper with cutouts of enlarged newspaper articles glued onto it. Most of the articles were about Phantom Thief Red and had titles like PHANTOM THIEF RED APPEARS! and PHANTOM THIEF RED SAVES THE DAY! There were even articles from my dad’s time!

“Pretty neat, eh? These are all articles about Phantom Thief Red solving cases,” Rio said, surveying her collage with a happy smile. She really was a superfan. “And here is where we keep all our data.”

She took a file folder out of a drawer.

Data?

“For example, of everything Phantom Thief Red has stolen, twenty-eight percent were paintings compared with forty-six percent being jewels. We’ve also calculated the value of the things that were returned as best we could, based on the available information.”

Wh-whoa…

The file was filled with papers containing graphs and explanations, making it easy to follow. It included details like where and when Phantom Thief Red appeared, along with pictures of each location, accompanied by comments. Everything was neatly charted on a graph. I even recognized a few of the places in the photos—they must have been taken after the events.

I turned the page and saw a picture of an old woman. “Who’s this?”

“That’s one of the people who had something stolen from her returned by Phantom Thief Red. We try to find and interview them. This person had a ring stolen and returned.”

Whaaat?! You guys do stuff like that, too? Talk about taking being a fan to a whole ’nother level!

I turned the page again.

Wait, what?!

The next page was a drawn picture of our card.

“That is the card Phantom Thief Red leaves behind. We created a picture of what we think it looks like by asking people who’ve seen it. The real cards are all taken by the police, so we can’t actually see them for ourselves,” Rio said, looking at the file together with me.

Their best guess was actually pretty close to the real deal. At first, I almost thought they’d drawn it while looking at an actual card.

The shape of the markings, even the font and arrangement were all pretty accurate. Taking a closer look, I realized some bits and pieces were slightly off, but I never would’ve guessed they could re-create this just by asking people about it…

Do fans always go this far?!

“Rio gets a bit caught up in herself when it comes to Red. Sorry about that,” Saiki said, seeing that I was taken aback by the intensity of it all.

Yeah… I could tell…

Rio didn’t seem to mind me one bit, though, as she went over to a drawer and took out a wristwatch.

“This is another thing Phantom Thief Red stole and returned to its owner. I asked them to give it to us…”

Geez! You did what?!

“And this is the case you were there for, right?”

Rio took out a new file. It had Sky Towers written on the front of it.

The Sky Towers incident.

Back then, bad guys had stormed an amusement building complex, taking Kei, Misaki, and other people as hostages. I’d had to temporarily team up with the Middle School Detective, Hibiki Shirasato, to handle that one.

“Here are the articles from that incident.” Rio opened up the folder, and there were several articles from different newspapers. The picture all had the Sky Towers in the background, with Hibiki and the police on the scene. This was probably just before they caught the bad guys and saved the hostages.

“Can you tell me about what happened to you?” Rio asked, leaning forward with great interest.

“I was there but…the truth is, I didn’t even see Red.”

You can’t see yourself, after all. Yup, not technically lying.

“But you know, you must’ve seen something. Like how the police moved. You probably met Hibiki Shirasato during this case, too, right? And…”

Rio had a long list of questions, which I stumbled to answer, but I managed to keep her off the trail without telling any flat-out lies. This went on for about ten minutes before she must’ve been satisfied with the interview, because she let out a deep breath and stretched.

“Argh, I’m so jealous of you, Asuka. Being at the scene of the crime meant you were that much closer to Phantom Thief Red,” she said, before releasing a sigh of regret.

Um, the Red you’re looking for just might be closer than you think…

Not that I could actually say that.

“So do you have a better idea of what our club does now?” Rio asked, looking at me.

“Yeah. Although, I’m surprised you were able to get the school to let this be a club.”

“Rio originally wanted it to be the Phantom Thief Red club,” said Daiki, “but the student council didn’t let that one through, which is why we broadened it to all phantom thieves. The student council wasn’t thrilled with the idea even when they did eventually pass it, though.”

“The only reason it got the okay was because Rio came forward with a mountain of files and data. They probably lost to her passion,” added Kento.

“Ah, so that’s what happened. That makes more sense. So even the student council can’t keep up with Rio.”

“If they weren’t going to pass it, I was going to run for student council again and force it in,” Rio said, like this was easy to do. Although, coming from her, it didn’t sound like she was joking.

Actually, I don’t think she is joking. It sounds like that is exactly what she would do.

Not only would Rio do it, but according to President Shiori, she probably could, too.

“And since this isn’t just a Phantom Thief Red club, we have details from other phantom thieves on file as well.”

Other phantom thieveslike Fantasista?

Fantasista was the world-famous phantom thief we had to face on the Flower Song. I thought his reason for stealing—because it’s fun—was dumb, but his ability was no joke. It was a hard battle, but we got the diamond back in the end.

“That’s right! I was so surprised to hear that they appeared on the Flower Song. You were there for that one, too, right? Ugh, I’m sooo jealous,” she said with another sigh, before snapping back and continuing, “Here’s Fantasista’s file,” she said, taking out a new folder.

Oh? I’d like to see this one.

It’s good to know as much as you can about your enemies, after all. I opened the file she handed to me.

Uh…

It was a bunch of newspaper articles, but they were all written in English.

Um, yeah…I can’t read that.

I did take some time to go through the articles, though, looking at the pictures of empty museums and pedestals where expensive art was supposed to be.

“You probably haven’t started learning English yet. I can tell you what they say when you have some time, if you want.” Rio closed the file.

An explanation from Rio. I want to hear it, but I’m also afraid to say yes.

As interested as I am, I bet she can go on a while…

But wow, I’m surprised to see all this. Never knew there were people out there who do this much research. I’d better not disappoint the people who cheer me on like Rio does!

I need to keep doing what I do the best I can!

3. Unexpected News

3Unexpected News

The sweet, fragrant smell of demi-glace sauce reached my nose.

Mm-mmm!

Dinner tonight was my dad’s famous beef stew. It was one of my favorites.

My dad, still wearing his apron, brought out three bowls and set them down on the table for us.

Today was his restaurant’s day off. That’s why he made something that normally takes a while.

Unfortunately, my uncle was running late because of work, but beef stew was perfect for times like these, since it was easy to reheat.

“All right! That’s everything,” Dad said as he brought out a big bowl of salad for us, which he set down on the table.

“Kei. Dinner’s ready,” I called over to Kei, who was watching the news on television.

……………”

He didn’t respond, though.

Is there something interesting on the news today?

I turned around to get a look for myself.

There was a female newscaster and an older man in a suit who looked like an expert in a news studio.

“And now, on to today’s top story. At five o’clock this afternoon, Phantom Thief Red struck again, this time targeting the XY Museum, where several valuable Renaissance paintings were stolen. Authorities have confirmed that a genuine Phantom Thief Red calling card was left at the scene. Interestingly, the stolen artwork is not classified as previously stolen, leaving the thief’s motives unclear. The police have launched a full-scale investigation, dedicating all available resources to tracking down Phantom Thief Red’s whereabouts.”

Um, huh? Did they say Red?

Wait, what?!

Both me and Kei, and my dad, were all at home today at five o’clock!

I stood up in front of the TV.

What’s alarming about this case is that none of the art stolen by Phantom Thief Red has any ties to known criminal activity,” the expert stated with a serious, regretful expression.

“And why is that?”

“Each piece is highly valuable, meaning Phantom Thief Red may have stolen legitimate artwork this time.”

“And if that’s the case, what does it imply?”

Image - 08

“It could mean that Phantom Thief Red’s motives for these thefts have changed.”

“Changed”?! What’s this guy talking about?!

“Namely, it’s possible they’ve chosen to use their talents for monetary gain. Given the current climate, it wouldn’t be surprising.”

“If that’s true, however, Phantom Thief Red—once known for their chivalrous style of theft—would have strayed from their original path… A truly unfortunate turn of events.”

The newscaster summarized the story before moving on to the next news piece.

Uh…

Um…

What are they saying?!

Phantom Thief Red has new motives?

We’ve strayed from our path?

The heck we have! What’s going on here?! I didn’t do anything!

“There’s a fake,” Kei said calmly.

“A fake?! So there’s someone out there pretending to be Phantom Thief Red and going around stealing legitimate paintings?”

“That’s right. That’s the only feasible explanation. That said, I don’t know why they would pretend to be Phantom Thief Red. Even if they want to pin the blame on us, perfectly re-creating our card would take a lot of effort.”

What do you mean? They barely talked about the card on the news.

“Exactly. They didn’t say there was a possibility that it was a replica, meaning the police believe it is the real thing.”

No… So even the police have fallen for it… Is that card really that easy to replicate, though?

“It isn’t. To start off with, there’s only a handful of people who have ever even seen the card. The police always collect them at the scene of the crime. So a regular person would never have access to one. Not only that, but the cards also use a special holographic image that makes them difficult to replicate. The police believing they’re the same cards means they’ve replicated that as well.”

“The holo, uh, thingy is that shiny part of the card, right?”

“That’s correct. While it’s not impossible to copy, the impostors would need an actual card to create a replica that would fool the police.”

“So the fake Red has one of our cards?!”

“Precisely. They’re using our name to try and pin the blame on us while they make off with expensive paintings.”

“Those rats! I’m not gonna let them get away with this!”

Kei turned around and went straight to his room. He was going to do some research.

All I could do was rely on Kei for now. He would find the information we need.

You just wait, you big phony!

Although…I wonder how that news sounded to Rio? I have a bad feeling about this.

4. Rio’s Rage

4Rio’s Rage

When I got to my classroom the next morning, something felt different. Usually, mornings were loud, with people talking to each other, but it was unusually quiet.

Hmm? Is it just me, or is everyone looking at me…

My eyes met with Misaki’s. She glanced uncomfortably toward my desk.

I turned my head to look and found…

Uh-oh!

It was Rio, sitting in my chair with her legs crossed. Even from across the room, I could feel the intense aura of anger radiating from her.

Yeah… I get why everyone is so quiet now…

Everyone was looking at me—they wanted me to do something about her.

Wh-what am I supposed to do? I’d rather not get involved if I can…but I can’t leave her like this.

All right.

I slowly approached Rio.

“Um, Rio?” I said gingerly, and she turned toward me.

Wow, she looks so scary! You know what, maybe this was a bad idea.

I’d never seen anybody so angry. I reflexively stepped back when our eyes met.

“You see the news yesterday?” Rio said, holding back the rage in her voice.

“What news?”

The news of the fake Red flashed in my mind as I said this.

“The news about Phantom Thief Red!”

WHAM.

Rio slammed a fist on the desk, causing the entire classroom to go completely silent.

Seeing everyone’s shock brought Rio out of her rage, and her expression began to soften.

“Sorry… I have a hard time staying calm when it comes to all things Red.”

Guess she was mad at Red and not me.

Although, wait… Technically, that is me.

“Asuka, I want to talk to you later after school. Could you make some time for me?”

“You want to talk?”

Seeing as this was Rio, it obviously had to do with Red, and seeing as Kei was still doing his research, I figured maybe I could learn something from talking with her.

“Okay.”

“All right, I’ll see you in the clubroom after school, then,” she said, before quickly leaving our classroom. Nobody said anything for a little bit after she left.

“That girl’s like a typhoon, isn’t she?” Misaki said from next to me.

That’s for sure. But why was she so mad at Red? Even if it was about the news from yesterday, was there any reason to get that angry about it?

My bad feeling got even worse.

I went straight to the clubroom after school.

“Coming in.” I knocked on the door before opening it.

“Oh, you’re here.”

It was Daiki. He was sitting on a chair near the door, big and stout, folding his strong arms in front of his chest.

Toward the back of the room was Kento, who looked up from the book he was reading. He had a sharp, keen look in his eyes that softened with a smile as soon as he saw me.

You know, seeing Kento read a book whenever I see him reminds me of Kei. Although, he’s also too nice to be Kei.

So where’s Rio… Oh?

She wasn’t in the clubroom.

“Sorry. A teacher needed Rio’s help for something. She’ll be here in a minute,” Daiki said, seeing me look around the classroom.

“You don’t need to stand while you wait. Take a seat.”

He pointed to a folded-up chair.

“O-okay.”

I unfolded the chair and placed in on the side of the room before sitting.

The room was quiet.

Ugh… This is so awkward…

Thinking about it, it was my first time being alone with these two without Rio. When I’d come before, Rio did all the talking, so there wasn’t a dull moment.

I’m starting to get a bit nervous.

Even though the silence was awkward, it wasn’t like I had anything to talk about, and the other two didn’t seem to mind me being there, either.

Daiki was still sitting there with his eyes closed, and Kento had his nose in a book.

Though neither of them was as independent as Rio, they seemed to enjoy doing their own thing.

Whatever the case may be, I have to wonder why these two would join such a niche club.

This one was her friend in middle school, right?

I glanced over at Daiki. He must’ve noticed me, because he opened his eyes and looked straight at me.

He tilted his head slightly to the side with a “Hmm?”

Now’s my chance to ask.

“So, um… How did you guys become friends with Rio?” I asked the question that was on my mind.

“You want to know?”

Sure do!

“When I first started at the middle school, she came up to me out of nowhere and asked, ‘You! Are you satisfied with this school?!’ At the time, I didn’t really think too much about it, but she disliked the way we had so many rules and regulations on how we were supposed to look and act, and she wanted us to use our heads and think for ourselves.”

Whoa! That’s the first thing she said to you? Yup, sounds like Rio, all right.

“Honestly, at first, I was like, ‘Who is this girl?’ but there was something true about what she said. So I started hanging out with her. I think Kento has the same story.”

I looked over at Kento, who was nodding quietly without looking up from his book.

“And once she got going, there was no stopping her. When she first ran for student body president, she won everyone over almost immediately with just one speech. After she became president, things really got interesting. She started noticing problems around the school that the rest of us never even thought about, and she found ways to solve them, even when they seemed impossible. She showed us a kind of freedom at school that we didn’t even know we wanted.”

Wh-whoa! So what President Shiori said about her changing the school from the bottom up was true.

“She’s a bit of a strange one on the day-to-day, though,” Daiki said with a chuckle.

That’s true… She’s definitely weird.

“Sorry for the wait.”

The door slid open, and Rio came in.

Her steps were loud and heavy as she walked to the opposite side of the table in the middle of the room.

“Let’s get started. I’ll tell you why I brought you all here today,” she said, looking at the three of us. The expression on her face was intense. “You guys all know about the case on Phantom Thief Red from yesterday, right?”

I knew that was why she called me over.

“About how they stole some paintings from a museum?” Daiki answered.

“Yes! Phantom Thief Red sneaked into a museum and stole expensive artwork.”

You could hear her anger in the way her voice shook.

“Phantom Thief Red always does that, if you think about it,” said Daiki.

“It’s not anything like he always does!!” Rio shouted, slamming the table with her fist. She leaned forward until she was pressed up against it. “Phantom Thief Red doesn’t steal for his own benefit. He only takes things that criminals have stolen from innocent people. But this time, he just up and stole from the actual owner! This is definitely not like always!”

“I—I know, Rio. I saw the news yesterday, too. What I meant to say was that it seems strange, is all.”

“Yeah, duh! Phantom Thief Red would never do such a thing.”

You tell them Rio! You’re exactly right. ’Cause it was a phony.

“Perhaps it was an impostor?” Kento said, looking up from his book.

There you go!

That’s exactly what I wanted to hear from one of this school’s top students. Sharp thinking!

As I thought this in my head, I gave a big nod.

But Rio shook her head. “No, it was the real Phantom Thief Red, all right.”

Whaaat? But why? How can you say that with such confidence?

“I contacted the police working on the case about it last night,” Rio said, biting her lip out of frustration as she did.

Image - 09

You talked to the police about it? Can you even do that?

Without giving me time to question this, Rio continued, “The news claims Red used the exact same card he always uses. That a scientific analysis of the card said there wasn’t a single difference.”

That’s just like Kei said yesterday. The police think the card is the real thing.

If that’s the case, it meant that there was no way for anybody to realize that Red was a fake.

“So that means the real thing stole those paintings.”

No… You guys don’t believe in me…

“If this is the case, then there is one thing we need to do.” Rio pointed at the three of us. “If Phantom Thief Red is going to steal for himself, then he’s no long Phantom Thief Red to me,” she declared.

“But there’s no denying that it is the real Phantom Thief Red. Even if they did have a change of heart,” Kento added calmly.

“Yes… Which is why I…we have to catch him!”

Rio clenched her fist as she said this before slamming it against the whiteboard behind her.

There wasn’t the slightest hint of hesitation in her eyes. She really intended to catch Phantom Thief Red.

I glanced over at Daiki and Kento, who both shared the same expression that said, “There she goes again.”

They didn’t seem upset about it, though. They had the same eyes as Rio, filled with determination.

Rio turned to me. “You’ll help us, right, Asuka?”

“Help you”… You mean, help you catch me? No can do.

“What do you mean by ‘catch him’?”

I didn’t know how to answer her question, so I asked my own question instead.

“I have a good idea. I want you to trust me,” Rio said with a confident smile.

Evidently, she had a plan.

So Rio, the person who understands Red more than anyone else, has a plan to catch me…

How is this gonna end?!

5. Who Are You Guys?!

5Who Are You Guys?!

It was Sunday night, and I was inside a thirty-floor building—in my Red outfit, obviously.

Kei had found information that there was a stolen diamond here—the Blue Star. It was a large sapphire gemstone that’d been stolen from a museum two weeks ago.

We had information that the owner of this building had ordered the theft so that he could sell it abroad.

Which meant it was time for us to intervene!

We were going to take the Blue Star back and find some evidence to get the owner of the building caught.

That’s what we do, after all—Phantom Thief Red.

Just because there was a phony running around didn’t mean we needed to stop doing our thing.

Nope! If anything, we needed to do Red work now more than ever.

“Everything seems fine so far.”

I heard Kei’s voice in my earpiece. He was in a different place where he had a good view of the building.

He had a blueprint of the building that he’d acquired beforehand, and he was actively hacking the security CCTV monitor to see what they saw and help navigate for me without getting caught.

I looked around to make sure there were no security guards present. The lights were all off, so the hallway was pitch-black, but I could see thanks to my night vision scope.

Though it wasn’t that late, there weren’t many people in the building that day because it was a Sunday.

Yup, all clear.

“The area thirty feet ahead of you is a blind spot for the security cameras.”

“Got it.”

I confirmed where the security cameras were and moved forward, slinking against the wall.

The gemstone we were after this time was on the twentieth floor, so I still had three floors to go.

I reached some stairs at the end of the hallway, but they were closed off.

“You’ll need to go to the opposite end of the hallway; there are more stairs there.”

Okay.

Carefully, I stepped back into the hallway, making sure to stay aware of my surroundings.

That’s when it happened.

Huh?!

I almost blurted this out loud when I looked down the hall but managed to stay quiet.

There were people down the hall. Two of them.

But they weren’t security… There was no way Kei would let any guards slip by him.

I could tell that they weren’t wearing patrol uniforms, either. They were dressed in all black—very suspicious.

“Kei! There’s people here! Two of them, and I don’t think they’re security. Do you see anything?” I said quietly so that they couldn’t hear me.

“……!” Kei gasped under his breath. “Okay, I’ll look into it now.”

Of the pair, one was taller and one was shorter. They both looked like men.

“The indoor security team consists of ten members. Right now, there are two patrolling the tenth floor and two on the second. Aside from the cameras I hacked and blocked, the rest are functioning normally. There’s no way a regular person could have made it to this floor.”

“Then who are these two in front of me?”

“My guess is they came to steal the Blue Star.”

“So we’re not the only ones here to do that?!”

“I didn’t expect them to show up at the same time as us, but it is an incredibly valuable gemstone. The real question is, how did they know the Blue Star would be in this building?”

That’s true…

“The only reason we were able to figure it out is because you worked your magic. I doubt some random burglar would be able to find out…”

“We should assume they aren’t just ordinary burglars. This building is heavily guarded, with only two viable routes of entry. The first is the one you went through, but there was no sign anyone else used it before you. The other route would require at least two people to pull off. I didn’t consider it, since you were infiltrating solo, but it’s possible they went with that route to slip past security unnoticed.”

“But wouldn’t that mean they were able to figure out one of the two routes you came up with? Just who are these guys?”

“Y’all gonna sit there yappin’ all day, or come on out and play? We know you’re there. Or are you just stalkin’ us, huh?”

Huh?!

When I realized it, the pair was already looking this way.

They found me! And they sound like they’re from Kansai?!

I leaped out from behind the wall into the middle of the hallway. We were in a spot that couldn’t be seen on the security camera.

Image - 10

“Be careful.”

“I know that.” I stood my ground, facing the duo.

“Who are you?!” I shouted, pointing at the pair.

“Oh, silly me. Pardon me, that was rude. Here’s our business card, you can find us at— C’mon, use yer head! I ain’t about to tell ya who we are! Ain’t that right, partner?”

The little one shrugged before looking over to the taller one.

“But we ain’t got a business card,” the taller one said. He sounded kinda dopey.

“Ya dang fool! That’s called sarcasm. And even if we had a business card, we sure as heck wouldn’t give it over.”

“Really? But ain’t they for givin’?” the taller one drawled.

“Would ya use that thick skull o’ yours??!!” the little one said, face-palming in frustration.

Uh?

I watched blankly as the pair went back and forth with one another.

What’s wrong with these two? It’s like watching a comedy movie.

When I was finally able to see them better, the tall one was bulging with muscles, and the shorter one was thin, almost scrawny. When he stood behind the big guy, you could barely even see him.

The two continued their banter, and it almost made me forget that we were in a heavily guarded building.

“Asuka…!”

Huh?

Hearing Kei’s voice snapped me back into the moment.

The shorter of the two men came darting forward with a punch.

Shoot! I stopped paying attention!

He planted his fist right into my belly.

“Ouch…” I lurched forward, falling to my knees in pain.

“Y’all messed up.” He jumped back.

“Wh-who are you two?” I said, trying to catch my breath.

“Us? We’re Phantom Thief Red, ya hear?” the little guy answered.

…………!!!

What the—?!

“It’s your lucky day, I reckon, meetin’ a celebrity. But if y’all want an autograph, you’ll hafta talk to my manager.”

The two looked at each other and snickered.

“All right, sweetie pie, you sit tight and rest your little behind right here. We’re gonna go fetch that Blue Star. Shall we, partner?”

“All righty!”

The pair skipped together, side by side, down the hall.

They think they can make a joke outta me?!

I tried to get up to give chase, but I still couldn’t move.

“Either way, those two just claimed they were Phantom Thief Red, which can only mean…”

“That they are the fake Red.”

“Yup! So we can’t let them get away with this. If they’re after the Blue Star, then we’ll stop them, and maybe I can kick their butts while I’m at it!” I readied my sleeping-gas pellets.

They won’t see this coming!

I launched multiple pellets at the smaller man down the hall. They went flying straight toward the fake Reds.

That’s gotta hit!

“Hup!”

The little man let the tension out of his shoulders, turning to the side to stretch them, and somehow dodged the first pellet.

“Ruh-roh!”

For the rest, he bent his upper body over backward, avoiding them all at once.

Seriously?! What’s with this guy?! He looks like he’s just messing around, but he dodged all my pellets…

“Ya ain’t gonna hit me with those.” Still bent over backward, he stuck out his tongue at me, then he turned the corner down the hall.

Not so fast!

I got up and chased them. When I turned the corner, they were already a good distance away, but I could still see them.

They’re far, but I can catch them!

I followed them, running up some stairs, which led to a large, open floor.

Huh?

The fake Red duo was nowhere to be seen. I looked around, and there was nobody on the entire floor. Squinting my eyes, I could make out an open door at the other side of the room.

There!

“Asuka, wait!” Kei tried to stop me, but I didn’t have time to listen. There was a placard on the door that said COMPANY PRESIDENT’S OFFICE, and it was half-open.

I carefully peered through the door to find a giant room with a thick carpet flooring. Near the window was a giant, expensive-looking desk, and the walls were lined with bookshelves. I slowly entered the room.

“No…” I whispered to myself.

The bookshelf on the other side of the window behind the desk was about six feet tall, with a safe built into it, and the door to the safe was already open.

I looked inside the safe to find it empty.

Is this where the Blue Star was? But where’s the fake Red duo?

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP.

Before I could find time to think, an earsplitting beeping sound rang off throughout the building.

Is that the alarm?! Did those two trap me?!

“Get out of there, Asuka!”

I snapped out of my shock when I heard Kei’s voice.

Biting down on my lip, I sprinted away as the alarm blared all around me.

6. More Big News?!

6More Big News?!

“Whew,” I sighed as I entered the living room.

Breakfast was ready for me on the kitchen table.

“You’re awake? I heard you had quite a day yesterday.”

My dad motioned toward the living room TV with his eyes. They were already talking about it on the news.

The female newscaster and the male expert were sitting next to each other.

We have received a report from the police that, last night, Phantom Thief Red successfully stole the Blue Star. The security team, found asleep at the scene, had the thief’s signature card in their pockets. Authorities have confirmed that the gemstone was a previously stolen item,” said the lady.

Yes, as stated during the police press conference, it was stolen from the WQ Museum,” added the expert.

“That being said, we’ve yet to hear word from its rightful owner that the gemstone has been returned.”

“Yes. Normally, when Phantom Thief Red goes up againstcriminals, they leave the details written on their card. Or when they retrieve stolen goods, they either find their way to the police or their original owner. This time, while Phantom Thief Red did leave their calling card behind, it has been over half a day with no sign of the Blue Star…”

Argh! This is all their fault! They pinned the blame on us again!

I turned off the TV.

“Let’s not get too upset now,” my dad said, turning to me. “You met the fakes, right? What were they like?”

“They were a couple of goofs! They were telling jokes to each other in a Kansai accent the entire time…”

“Which was why you let your guard down.”

Oof… My dad’s on the mark, but I can’t say anything back.

I fell right into their trap. Kei even tried to stop me, but I didn’t listen.

If I hadn’t fallen for their trick, maybe I would’ve been able to trail them more…

Thanks to Kei’s navigation, I’d been able to escape from the building, but it was really close.

“They used your hotheadedness against you, I feel like. You’ve never met them before, have you?”

Of course not!

“Good…morning…” Kei dragged himself over to the living room with a blank look on his face.

He’s always such a zombie in the mornings. But that’s not important right now!

“Kei! How could you get any sleep last night?! I got tricked, and I almost got caught by the police!”

“But you didn’t…so there’s no problem.”

“Well, yeah, thanks to you, I guess. But the bad guys still got away!”

“We’ll have…another chance…”

“Oh?”

Kei picked up the newspaper and flipped through some pages before handing it over to me.

You want me to read the paper?

I curiously cocked my head to the side a bit as I took the newspaper, looking down at the page Kei had opened it to.

Uh…………?

I stared blankly at the contents with my mouth wide-open. There was giant font glaring back at me that said:

I CHALLENGE PHANTOM THIEF RED

The enormous words took up an entire page in the newspaper.

Wh-what is this?! Who would do that?

“It says on the bottom of the page,” Kei said, and I glanced down toward the bottom of the page.

The name, TONY Kiyose Museum, was written there.

“You’ve heard of TONY, right? They’re one of the largest electrical appliance companies in Japan and globally. Kiyose is the name of the head of TONY—and it should ring a bell.”

“Kiyose”?

“It’s Rio!”

Right, Rio’s last name was Kiyose.

Wait, did she do this?!

I took another look at the newspaper page. Under the large font that said, I CHALLENGE PHANTOM THIEF RED, there was an explanation of what the challenge would be.

“It says here that the TONY Kiyose Museum will be displaying one of the world’s most expensive rubies, the Red-Hot Crown, for two days. ‘If Red can steal it before the time is up, then you may have it’… Wait, they’re doing what?!”

Why would they do something like this?

“They’re trying to bait us out.”

“B-but! Red would never accept a challenge like this.”

“Yup. We wouldn’t, but the only ones who know that are you and me. The fake Red stole for themselves once, and they aren’t returning the Blue Star, either. It’s all over the news, so the world thinks we only works for ourselves now.”

That’s not true, though!

But even it did make the news, and no matter what people thought, we had no reason to accept the challenge.

We didn’t have a reason to steal that jewel.

No matter what the world thought, we were a righteous thief—definitely not the type to get baited by some challenge and steal out of anger.

But…what about the fake Red? They just might do it.

What would happen if the fake Red went and stole the Red-Hot Crown? If they succeeded, it would tell the world that Red stole to be selfish.

And if they failed, it would mean Red failed.

I don’t like either of those!

The duo might even get caught, which would make it look like they’d been the real Red the entire time. They’d already fooled the police, after all.

We were the only ones who could prove they weren’t the real Red, but it’s not like we could up and say, “We’re Red,” to the world.

Argh! What are we gonna do?!

7. The Challenge for Phantom Thief Red

7The Challenge for Phantom Thief Red

School was over for the day, and I was in front of the Phantom Thief Club.

Kei wanted me to go and see what Rio’s intention was with the challenge.

I held my hand out to knock on the door, but before I could, it slid open, and Rio came out.

Wagh!

We almost bumped into each other, so I had to dodge to the side.

“Whoops! Ah, Asuka! Perfect timing. I was just going to see you.”

Rio was looking for me?

“I actually stopped by to talk with you…”

Hearing this, Rio gave a big nod.

“That’s what I thought, and I think we want to discuss the exact same thing.”

So the public challenge from this morning?

“Let’s go.”

Huh? Go where?

Rio grabbed my hand and started walking with vigor, pulling me along with her.

Hey, waaait!

The luxury vehicle came to a stop.

For some reason, I was riding inside it.

It stopped before a large gate.

When Rio brought me out of the school, she’d taken me to a jet-black luxury car that’d been waiting for us, which we both hopped into.

The car belonged to Rio’s family! And the inside had these really fancy seats, with up to four people able to sit in the back facing each other.

And not only that! We were even served tea.

I couldn’t actually get myself to drink the tea, though, because I was afraid of spilling it. Daiki and Kento—in addition to Rio, obviously—drank their tea without even giving it a second thought.

Not five seconds passed before—

HUMMM—

—a low humming sound could be heard as the gates slowly opened.

Whoa, cool!

I didn’t have time to be surprised, though, as the car started up and drove through the gate. Beyond it, there was a place like a giant royal garden with sprawling, well-kept green trees and flowers blooming everywhere.

Before long, we could see a building that had been hidden from the gate.

“What is this place?”

My eyes went wide as I gazed up, taking in the sight of it. It was a three-story brick house, but you could tell just by looking at it from the outside that it was absolutely ginormous. It had the width of maybe five normal houses…

Is this where Rio lives?!

The car parked just a little bit in front.

“Welcome home, Madame.”

An older gentleman with graying hair and a tailcoat opened the door for us.

“I brought some friends with me, Jeeves. Please take them to the guest lounge. I will get changed.”

“Very well, Madame.”

The man in the tailcoat bowed his head down as he said this.

J-Jeeves?! Is this man a real live butler?! I’ve never seen one of those before!

“I’ll head up for now. I’ll see you guys soon.”

Rio handed her bag to a maid who was waiting nearby before walking inside.

Image - 11

Uh…

I was trying to process everything that was going on.

“You okay, Asuka? Your mouth is open,” Daiki said while holding back a snicker.

Aw, geez!

Daiki and Kento must’ve been used to this, because they seemed entirely unsurprised. Seeing as they’d been friends with Rio since middle school, it made sense.

Would it kill you to maybe let me knowabout this a bit sooner? I only learned that Rio was from a rich family this morning, too.

Hmm…

I looked at the two with jealous eyes while the butler spoke up.

“Allow me to take you to the guest lounge,” he said, before walking toward the building.

The building was so overwhelming that I almost forgot how to walk, when…

“C’mon, let’s go.”

“Rio’s waiting for us.”

…Daiki and Kento, who’d already taken a few steps forward, turned around to call out to me.

I—I know!

I jogged to catch up to them.

When the butler reached the front door, which was a big double door, it opened up.

“Please come in.”

The butler smoothly guided us through.

“Whoa…”

A gasp escaped my mouth when I entered the foyer.

The ceiling was high and shaped in an arch with fancy lights running along it. The floor was made of marble, and about twenty-five to thirty feet ahead of us stood large marble pillars that extended to the roof.

It felt like the entrance to a luxury hotel!

“Every time I come here, I have to remind myself this is a house,” Daiki said with a bit of a wry chuckle.

That’s for sure…

Even just the foyer was enough for my entire house to fit in.

“Follow me to the guest lounge.” The butler closed the door behind us and walked ahead again.

Oh, right. I’m here to hear Rio out. I can’t let this super-fancy house make me forget what I came here to do.

That being said, it was strange to go into somebody’s house and not take my shoes off. The butler brought us down a hallway with a red carpet. And boy, was it a long hallway! Though I could see the other end, it had to be at least a hundred feet long.

“Here is the lounge.”

The butler stopped halfway down the hall in front of a door, which I guess was the guest lounge.

Inside the lounge were a big sofa and table, and a window that let sunlight into the large open room. There were paintings of landscapes on the wall, and a flower vase that had lavender in it.

“Whew…”

I finally started breathing again when the butler eventually left. I was getting really nervous; I think I just wasn’t used to places like this.

“Look, it’s today’s newspaper.”

Kento picked up a newspaper that was on the table. It was the same one that I’d read earlier that morning.

“Did you see this, Asuka?” Daiki asked.

“I did. I was surprised when I learned Rio came from such a wealthy family.”

Knock, knock.

There was a knock on the door before it opened, and Rio joined us in the room.

“Sorry for the wait.”

Rio had changed out of her uniform into jeans and an orange-and-red checkered shirt. It was the first time I’d seen her out of uniform, and her more rugged style really suited her. I’d assumed she would come out in a fancy dress or something, seeing as everyone had been calling her “Madame” only a few minutes ago.

“Okay, let’s get right to it!” Rio said, before looking over at the butler behind her. “Jeeves, did you get the thing I asked for?”

The butler had a small box decorated with white and brown colors.

“I want you guys to see this,” Rio went on.

With polite hand gestures, the butler opened the box.

Wait, isn’t this the?

“This is the Red-Hot Crown.”

Whaaaaaat?!

“I mean, I knew you owned it because it was written in the challenge letter, but I guess I thought you would have it kept somewhere a little safer…”

“It’s fine. We have enhanced security all around the house right now.”

I looked out the window, and there were big men wearing black suits outside.

Image - 12

Oh, I see. I guess I feel a little better about it, then.

“Wanna hold it?”

Can I really do that?!

“Sure. You’ll need to wear these gloves, though.”

The butler passed me a pair of gloves that I put on.

“Here you go.”

I cupped my hands, and Rio gave me the Red-Hot Crown.

It sparkled so much in the light that it almost looked like it was glowing.

This is so pretty!! And way heavier than I thought it would be. It is pretty wild for a gemstone to be this heavy!

I’ve handled a wide variety of gemstones doing my work as Red, but I’ve never gotten the chance to look at one so closely like this before.

“Thank you!” I said as I gave back the ruby.

“Sure. So did you see the paper?”

“I did, and I was so surprised by it. What are you trying to do by challenging Red?”

“Exactly what it sounds like. When they try to steal this gemstone, I’m gonna catch ’em with my own two hands.”

B-but…how do you know Red will actually come to steal this?

“He’ll come. This plan was something I’ve been working on for a while now, but after learning he stole the Blue Star last night, I knew his next target would be our Red-Hot Crown. That is why I needed to move fast.”

Huh… Move fast for what?!

“The deadline for the morning newspaper is one in the morning. It was announced that Red stole the Blue Star at ten o’clock last night, so we only had three hours,” Kento explained.

“Exactly. We were lucky that the Red-Hot Crown was in our museum. I was able to get my dad to agree to put it on display.”

I see… Well, kind of. What does the Blue Star have to do with the Red-Hot Crown? You’re making it sound like just because they stole the Blue Star, they’re coming for the Crown next?

“That’s right. It was actually only discovered recently, but the Blue Star and the Red-Hot Crown are closely related to each other.”

Oh? What do you mean by “related to each other”?

“Up until now, the two gemstones were just that: gemstones. They were each valuable because of how big they were, of course, but the same goes for diamonds and other jewels. Recently, though, ancient texts were uncovered that tell their story.”

“Ancient texts,” huh… So something written down a long, long time ago that has lasted until now is still around today.Kei once gave me a long explanation on the topic at a museum we went to before, so I kind of know what you’re talking about.

“And those texts consisted of a chain of letters that was written a long time ago between a prince from a country in a desert and a princess from a coastal region.”

A prince and a princess?

“Their countries were neighbors and once even allies, but by the time of the prince and the princess, tensions had risen, and war seemed inevitable. But even with all the turbulence, the prince and the princess met and fell in love.”

“Even though their nations weren’t friendly with each other?”

“Where you’re from doesn’t matter when you’re in love. It happened soon after they met, but meeting wasn’t something they could do so easily. They used each of their closest aides to make it happen, but they only saw the other a few times on the border, as far as we know.” Rio was staring out the window with a faraway look. “Eventually, the two countries did go to war, and it became impossible for them to get together. So instead, the prince sent a large, red ruby, and the princess sent a large, blue sapphire attached to their letters.”

“And let me guess, the ruby and the sapphire are…”

“The Red-Hot Crown and the Blue Star. After the letters shared between the prince and the princess were discovered, it was determined only a month ago that the ruby and sapphire talked about in the letters were the Red-Hot Crown and the Blue Star. Two weeks ago, however, the Blue Star was stolen by someone, which Red then stole. This means that the Crown will be what he’s after next!”

No… The reason Kei wanted to go after the Blue Star was because it was stolen…

“B-but how do you know Red will come after the Red-Hot Crown in the first place? If your family is the rightful owner of the Red-Hot Crown, then Red has no reason to steal it!”

That would make me a two-bit thief, after all! I’d never do that!

“If Red was still the same Red he used to be, that is…”

“Huh?”

“Now that the sapphire hasn’t been returned, I’m certain of it: Red has changed. He betrayed me…and everyone who believed in him until now. So I know he’ll come for the Crown. The two together are unbelievably valuable. If Red wants money, then he won’t let this chance slip by. And we’re going to bring him to justice!” Rio said, looking at the three of us as she did.

“Us going up against Red? Sounds like this could get interesting.”

“There’s no stopping Rio when she gets fired up. Yes, we’ll help you out.”

Both Daiki and Kento shared the same look of determination in their eyes.

“So, Asuka.” Rio looked to me. “I have arrangements for you to spend the night with us in the museum, so I want you to get ready.”

Wait, me too?

And now I have to go up against Rio…

What am I gonna do?

8. The Plan Begins!

8The Plan Begins!

It was Friday evening. I was standing in front of the museum where the Red-Hot Crown was set to display from the next day on. I’d ended up agreeing to spend the night here. I actually thought Kei would say no, but when I asked him…

“That should be fine. It works to our advantage.”

If that was what Kei said, then it was best I took his word for it.

So I decided to spend the night at the museum with Rio and the others. Rio was a short distance away from us, talking to somebody over her cell phone.

“Okay. Right on time,” Rio said before closing the call and looking toward us. “The Red-Hot Crown will be here soon.”

“Huh? Isn’t it supposed to go in the museum?”

“I’m having them let us hold on to it while the security team finishes preparations in the museum. We also wouldn’t want Red coming and stealing it while it gets transported. We’re working together with the police for this, and since it was so sudden, they still need a little more time to get ready.”

“When will it get here?” Daiki asked.

“Yeah… Three minutes, give or take,” Rio said, looking at her watch.

“Soon then, huh?” Kento said in a slightly nervous tone.

I was pretty nervous as well. I kept looking around. The museum is so big, it looks like a park. There are also ten-foot walls lining the outer edge of the grounds, meaning it won’t be easy getting in. Although, I bet that the little acrobatic Red could probably find an easy way over.

As I thought, four cars came one after another into the museum grounds, just like Rio said they would.

The cars parked, and from the first three emerged multiple big men in suits. All of them were paying close attention to their surroundings.

Those must be the police.

More men got out of the final car shortly after, and one of them had an attaché case.

The man holding the case approached Rio, with around ten more buff guys waiting behind him.

This is an impressive security outfit…

We followed after Rio and the men into the museum. The museum was a three-floor building made from orange bricks, and its door was large, thick, and made of wood.

Two of the security guards stood by the door, holding it open for us to get in. Once we were through, he closed it and let down its shutter, too.

I looked around the museum. I’d actually come straight here after school, only making a brief pit stop at home to get my things for the overnight stay, so I hadn’t seen the inside of the museum yet.

The lights were a warm color, the floor was covered with a soft wine-red carpet, and the walls were a pale beige.

We passed the reception area, and there was a sign directing the visitors through the museum. We were probably supposed to follow it down the hallway, but Rio and the others took a different path in the opposite direction.

We went through two more rooms before reaching an empty one with nothing on display.

It wasn’t a large space by any means, but it also wasn’t too small. There were no windows, either.

In the middle of the room was a glass case, with ropes around it to keep people from getting too close.

“The security system is turned off, right?” Rio asked as she examined the glass case.

“Yes.”

She nodded and looked around.

“I’m going to open it,” Rio said before unlocking the attaché case.

Inside it was the large ruby that she’d shown me before.

Rio, who was wearing gloves, took it out of its carrying case and into the glass case. She then put the glass back on the case before backing away.

“Turn on the security system.”

Rio gave the orders, and one of the security members used a walkie-talkie to contact someone else. Guess the system was actually being operated somewhere else.

Before long, we received word that the security system was on, and Rio let out a small sigh of relief. A few members of the security team and people who I could only assume were police all left the room. They must’ve gone to their posts.

It was a huge museum, so it made sense that there were so many people there to guard it. That said, there must’ve been fifteen security guards and officers remaining in the room.

Rio came over to us.

“Our match with Red starts now and will last for another two days. Until then, we won’t have a moment’s rest.”

“I know, I know.”

“We’ll move according to plan.”

Daiki and Kento responded, showing confident smiles.

The plan? What plan? No one’s told me anything yet…

“Ms. Kiyose. We need to make some final confirmations on tomorrow’s security,” a middle-aged man in a suit said to Rio. The man was one of the people who’d come out of the cars from earlier, and he had an even sharper look in his eyes than the others.

He’s probably a detective.

Rio mentioned that we were going to work together with the police, but it was more like she was running the show at this point.

I didn’t have anything to do, so I walked around and examined the room. There were security guards and detectives standing at the doors.

This room would be hard to infiltrate, even for the real Red—Kei and me.

“Looks like Rio is going to take a while, so let’s head back to our room.”

This was true. Rio was deep in conversation, and it didn’t seem like she would be finished any time soon. Daiki checked with Rio before we returned to our room, where we left our things before.

The building next door to the museum was an accommodation facility. This was where we were staying the night.

The museum and the accommodation facility were connected on the first floor by a hallway, which was obviously well guarded, too.

The door also required fingerprint verification to use, meaning your fingerprints had to be registered into a database for the door to recognize it. Daiki and Kento had already registered their fingerprints, so they could open the door. I hadn’t, so I needed someone else to open it for me.

It was inconvenient, but necessary for security purposes. The accommodation facility was pretty much a hotel, and it was so high-end that I actually felt bad being able to stay there for free.

We went back to get only the items we needed for the night before returning to the museum. When we got back to the hallway, it was packed with more strong-looking men.

Just how many people are there? There’s gotta be at least fifty…

Rio was waiting for us when we arrived at the room where the Red-Hot Crown was going on display. She had a large, tube-shaped bag.

Is that what I think it is?

“All right! We’re going to stay on watch through the night, so I thought we could use these.”

It is, isn’t it? Sleeping bags. I’ve seen those before.

Rio held up her clenched fist and called out:

“Come and get it, Phantom Thief Red!”

Ha-ha-ha…

I’m already here…

9. A Confession and Determination

9A Confession and Determination

It was eleven at night. After eating a late dinner at the museum restaurant, we went back to the room where the Red-Hot Crown was on display and got into our sleeping bags.

It didn’t take long before I heard the loudest snoring on the planet coming from Daiki. Kento was asleep, too, as far as I could tell.

I, on the other hand, couldn’t seem to fall asleep right away. Though in a bit of a tired daze, I stared up at the museum ceiling, slowly nodding off, until I eventually did fall asleep.

I suddenly woke up again, though, to utter silence. I looked at my wristwatch, and it was two in the morning. The night watch was still on guard, making their rounds.

Huh?

I turned to my side to find an empty sleeping bag. It was the one Rio had been using.

Maybe she went to the bathroom?

Curious, I slowly slipped out of my own sleeping bag to go check.

Daiki and Kento were completely still; they were both fast asleep. I was almost worried if they would be able to wake up in the event something actually happened…

I left the room, giving a small wave to the security guard before going down the hallway. There were security guards out there as well.

They were looking around the building, periodically contacting one another over their walkie-talkies. This would allow them to know something was happening if they didn’t receive a response back.

I heard that Rio got the best of the best for her security team, and I could tell this was the case.

The front door was sealed tight with a shutter, so we needed to take a separate entrance that only approved personnel could use. This door was the same as the accommodation facility—it required fingerprints to access.

The security here is pretty much perfect. I bet even Kei would have a hard time finding a route in.

The issue was, what would the fake Red do?

We were dealing with the thieves who stole the Blue Star, so we couldn’t let our guard down.

On top of this, due to the security presence, I couldn’t contact Kei so easily. The only reason I’d pretended to use the bathroom before was so I could leave the room and contact Kei, but he said I should just stay on watch for now. Though, it sounded like he had a plan of his own up his sleeve.

Huh?

At the end of the hall, I could see Rio sitting on one of the lounge chairs. She was alone, staring outside a window.

There was a different air about her. It was like there was something heavy on her mind.

Before I could muster up the courage to talk to her, she realized I was there first.

“Is that Asuka? What’s up?” she said to me.

“Oh, no. I just couldn’t sleep, is all… What about you?”

“I’m way too excited to sleep right now,” she said quietly, but there was a keen look in her eyes—even more than there usually was.

“Would you like to have a little chat over there, maybe?” Rio pointed outside the window.

There was a small courtyard around there, I think.

“Why not? I don’t think I’m gonna be falling asleep anytime soon either way.”

Rio and I both went down the hall toward the courtyard. The exit here also required fingerprint verification, of course.

“Wow… This is so pretty.”

The courtyard was lit up with blue, red, and white colors. The garden was thoroughly maintained, and the stone tiles gave off a royal feel. I walked toward the edge of the garden to get an close-up look, when…

“Stop right there, Asuka.”

Huh?! What?!

Rio grabbed my shoulder from behind as I took my first step forward.

“Watch out. There’s an alarm with an infrared sensor and security cameras set up just beyond here.”

No way… That was close.

I slowly pulled my foot back.

“We should be okay here.” Rio sat down on a nearby bench, and I sat next to her. “Why would Red change like that?!” she suddenly blurted, like it had been eating away at her this entire time. “Red was supposed to be heroic. There were so many people who believed in him, and then he just changed his mind out of nowhere!”

Rio punched her leg.

Image - 14

That’s not true at all. They aren’t the real Red! They’re two phonies!

Not that I could say that to her…

“Stealing for selfish reasons makes him just like any old crook you find on the streets!”

I bit down on my lip.

Don’t say anything!

“I just can’t stand it!”

No, Asuka… No…

“Red is despicable!”

Darn it! I just can’t take it anymore!!

I stood up from the bench before I could stop myself.

“Red would never do something like that!”

“What?” Rio eyes opened wide.

“Red would never, ever do this. It’s got to be someone else! It’s a fake! A phony!”

Ah… Whoops… I said the thing…

What would I do if she pressed me on this? What would I say? Would I have to tell her that I’m Red? I could never, not even to Rio.

I squeezed my eyes shut—

“Oh… So you figured it out, too…”

“Huh?”

—and then opened them to find Rio smiling.

“Looks like you’re a true Red fan yourself, eh?”

Uh? What?!

“I feel the same way. I know Red would never do that. A lot of these heists lately just don’t seem like Red’s work. Or at least, that’s what I think.”

“Whaaat?! B-but—! You were the one who insisted that Red wasn’t a fake!”

“I thought so because of the card at first, but forging a card isn’t impossible. It’s even easy if the thief sneaks into where the police kept it safeguarded. The police just don’t want to admit that, so they’re insisting it’s real. But I know it isn’t true! It’s so dumb and not fair for everyone to lose faith in Red over this!”

“B-but then why have you been saying Red is bad this entire time?”

“I just wanted to see whether or not you felt the same way about it as I do. Sorry for testing.”

Oh, so Rio’s believed in Red this entire time…

Wow, what a relief.

But there still is one question I need to ask.

“Why do you believe in Red so much?”

The way Rio was acting, fan wasn’t a strong enough word.

“It’s kind of a long story, but would you like to hear it?”

I nodded, and Rio looked up at the sky and began to share her story.

“It happened two and a half years ago, back when I was still in middle school and head of the student body council and fighting the school over a few changes I wanted to make. One day, my fountain pen—a gift from my dad that I cherished—was stolen from me.”

What?! Who would do something like that?!

“I don’t know. It happened over the summer when I was staying at our summer home with my family. There was a break-in, and even though everyone, including the police, was confident there’d be a quick arrest, nothing ever came of it. Two months went by, then three, and people’s attitudes started to shift.”

Their attitudes?

“Yeah. They were starting to give up, telling me to give up. They said the stolen stuff was probably long gone by now.”

“That’s so dumb! It’s not like it was your fault! Why would they tell you that?!”

“I know, and I couldn’t do it. The fountain pen was really special to me. But there was nothing a middle school student could do about it, so there was a part of me that did give up.”

Oh no…

“That is, until one day, when we received contact from the police saying the fountain pen was returned.”

“Huh? Out of the blue like that?”

“I didn’t get it, either. Which was why I went to the police asking how they found it. And when I did, the police officer reluctantly told me it was thanks to Phantom Thief Red.”

Red?! But two and half years ago…means it was my dad!

“Red had busted a criminal organization that sold stolen goods, returning everything back to the police. At the time, I’d heard rumors of Phantom Thief Red but never imagined in a million years he would get my pen back for me.”

Rio then looked at me.

“This pen was important to me, but to anyone else, it was just a regular old pen that was a little more expensive. But Red made sure I had it again. He must’ve realized it was important to whoever owned it, and I was so grateful.”

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. I get it now.

“I wanted to be like him, not that it would ever be possible.”

Nice one, Dad!

My dad would probably be happy to learn that there was someone here who had something important returned to them thanks to Red—especially because the person in question had continued cherish the act as well.

I only hope we’re able to do the same job he did.

“And ever since, I’ve been following all the Red news I could. This was how I learned there was kindness in Red’s thievery. That he has a desire for justice—something that hasn’t changed these past two and a half years. And that’s why I knew it wasn’t Red who committed these recent crimes. There’s nothing Red about him.”

Exactly! I was so happy to hear this, I had to hold back my tears.

“And that’s why I want to catch the fake Red with my own two hands and defend the real one,” Rio said, shining with determination.

All right! I’ll do everything I can to make that happen, too!

“But don’t you think you went a little overboard with the security?” I said. “What if the fake Red decides it’s too dangerous?”

“I have a plan for that, and I’ll let you in on it because you are someone who loves Red like I do.”

“Oh? What’s the plan?”

“I set a trap.”

What?! A trap?!

“The security in the courtyard seems perfect at a glance, but there is one hole in there on purpose. Let’s say he sneaks in tomorrow with the visitors; it doesn’t matter if he can’t make a clean getaway, right? So we are going to cut off this route so that he can’t get out. I worked with Daiki and Kento to figure it out, and no one else knows about it.”

Really?! So that’s your plan.

My eyes wandered, aimlessly scanning the courtyard—not that I could see the infrared system either way.

“The fake Red doesn’t appear to actually hack the security system of the buildings he infiltrates—just goes for any holes they find. I knew if our security was too tight, it would scare him off, so our only hope is he finds this hole on his own,” Rio said, her shoulders sagging a little.

10. The Gem of the Sea, the Gem of the Sands

10The Gem of the Sea, the Gem of the Sands

It was Sunday afternoon.

The first day of display ended with nothing happening. The same went for today, too, with little out of the ordinary. There were four more hours left for the challenge.

But no signs of the fake Red… Maybe our security was too tight?

Rio was in the display room, taking a TV interview. There were news stations all over the scene here, waiting for Red to appear. The clock was ticking on the public challenge, and they wanted to hear from Rio, it seemed.

“If Red doesn’t show up, do you consider that a victory for the museum?” a female reporter asked, holding out a mic for Rio to answer.

“Red will show up. The Blue Star they stole the other day is comparable in value to the Red-Hot Crown we have on display now, but together their worth multiplies many times over. With the Crown currently on public display, this is Red’s only chance to get it.” Rio didn’t seem nervous at all as she answered with ease.

“I see. However, I must point out that the police presence appears sparser than I would have expected. What is your strategy for guarding the Red-Hot Crown?”

“We’re relying on a flawless computer defense system. Having police officers and security guards stationed around the display would make it harder for visitors to fully enjoy the event. Since this is meant to be a chance for everyone to appreciate the gemstone, we wanted to create a more enjoyable viewing experience,” Rio replied without hesitation.

Behind her was a middle-aged detective who had a sort of bittersweet look. He must’ve been thinking about how it was usually his job to talk to the press.

I myself was leaning up against a wall, watching the interview. We had been on guard for two days straight, so I was starting to get tired.

Nevertheless, the display room was packed with people. Since there was a limit on how many people could enter the area at once to keep things from getting too chaotic, the line stretched out of the building.

“I bet they’re here to see Phantom Thief Red more than the jewel,” Daiki said from next to me.

“There’s no telling if Red is in this crowd or not,” Kento said with a sigh as he looked out at the crowd.

“That’s why we’re here, eh? Let’s trust our plan.”

Hearing this breathed some life back into me, and I pushed myself off the wall.

We’re almost through, so I’m gonna give it my all until the very end!

“There she is! Asuka!”

Huh?

I heard a voice I recognized, then turned to find Misaki, Yuzuki, and Kei.

Wh-why are you guys here?

“We wanted to surprise you. And maybe see Red if we got the chance,” Misaki said, sticking her tongue out at me playfully.

“Um…”

I didn’t know how to react and stumbled over my words. I was in the middle of waiting for the fake Red to appear, after all. I wasn’t in the mood for playfulness.

What’s more, Rio was—

“Oh, nice. You should show your friends around, Asuka.”

Ah, there she is. She finished her interview.

“Are you sure it’s okay?”

“We’ll be fine with just the three of us. Or do you not trust me?” Rio said with a devilish grin.

“No! That’s not the case at all!”

“Okay, I’ll go show them the display, then,” I said, before taking Misaki and the others through the display room.

“Wow, so this is the Red-Hot Crown,” Misaki said, staring intently through the glass case at the gemstone.

“It really is beautiful…and look, there’s even a blurb. It says here, ‘The Red-Hot Crown, a gemstone owned by the prince of a desert country, is part of a set with the Blue Star, a gemstone owned by the princess of a coastal country.’ I heard about this on TV the other day.”

Yuzuki looked at the Red-Hot Crown with glimmering eyes.

“The story about the prince and the princess, right?” I said. “I heard about it from Rio.”

We continued to talk about it as we left the display. There was a long line behind us, so we couldn’t spend too long there.

“There’s a second part to the story,” Kei added.

Oh? A second part? Now that you mention it, I didn’t learn about what happened to the prince and princess who sent each other the gemstones.

Do you know, Kei?

“The princess’s country was attacked by a third nation, not the prince’s.”

Whaaat?! And what happened then?

“Her country wasn’t very strong militarily, so they struggled to defend themselves. And because of the poor relations with the prince’s nation, they didn’t get any help.”

“So what did the prince do about it?” I asked.

“At the rate things were going, the princess’s nation was on the verge of collapse, and the prince had no idea what would happen to her. He desperately convinced his father, the king, to send troops. He revealed their secret enduring love that had blossomed despite the relationship between their countries, and he wanted to help her and rebuild peace.”

“And?! How did it all pan out?!”

“The king decided to place faith in his son and sent troops.”

“All right! Go king!”

“It was just in the nick of time, too. The princess’s castle was surrounded by enemy forces, on the verge of falling, when the prince’s army arrived. His troops saved the day and defended the kingdom. Afterward, the prince and the princess married, and their two nations united as one.”

“So they got married! That’s nice…”

Misaki, Yuzuki, and I all looked at one another with a shared look of relief.

“These gemstones are considered to be the reason the two nations became one, so this Red-Hot Crown and the stolen Blue Tear have tremendous historical significance.”

Image - 15

You don’t say.

Kei always knew everything. He was like a walking encyclopedia.

“Asuka, did you show them around?”

I turned to find Rio was standing next to me.

“Yes, I did. This is Misaki, Yuzuki, and my cousin, Kei.”

I introduced the three of them to Rio. Misaki and Rio both politely bowed, but Kei just stared at Rio.

“Aren’t you worried about getting the visitors of the museum involved?” Kei said out of nowhere to Rio.

Hey! Kei! Don’t be rude!

“I take it you don’t like my challenge?” Rio said, without appearing annoyed by the remark.

“You think that Red changed, right? If so, don’t you think Red might have changed to start taking hostages, too?” Kei asked, his expression unmoved.

…………!” Rio seemed bothered by that. “I thought about it, but regarding their safety, I…”

Just as Rio went to answer Kei…

RING-RING-RING-RING-RING-RING-RING!!!

…a loud alarm rang out throughout the museum.

“What’s that? A fire?”

“We should probably get out of here.”

“Where’s the emergency exit?”

The visitors started to clamor more with every passing second.

“No! It’s Red!”

“Yeah! It’s got to be!”

“Red’s here!”

And then they started to completely panic.

People started rushing to the exit, shoving by one another, including the people in front of the display.

This is bad. Very bad.

The security team and police wouldn’t be enough to calm this number of people.

A wave of visitors came rushing at us. I tried to weave my way through the crowd, toward the Red-Hot Crown, but to no avail.

As I struggled to push my way to the display…

BANG!

A flash of blinding light burst in the room with a loud boom.

“Agh!”

“My eyes!”

The people in the display room were screaming now.

Watch out! Is it Red?!

Crack!

I heard the sound of glass breaking, and an alarm went off at almost the exact same time. I looked over at the display and caught a glimpse of a familiar weird pair.

It’s them! They showed up! I’m not gonna let them get away this time!

I started running toward them but couldn’t get past the wall of people trying to go in the opposite direction. I saw one of the Reds throw something onto the ground. In an instant, smoke welled up around them, expanding out into the room.

A smoke bomb!

I watched through the haze as the big and small fake Reds leaped out of the room.

Shoot! They’re getting away!

“Argh! So reckless! There’s nothing elegant about this approach! That’s no Phantom Thief Red!” Rio shouted angrily.

“Rio, we have more important things to worry about…”

The fake Reds were no longer anywhere to be seen in the room.

I turned to Kei, who made his way to my side.

“Let’s move, Asuka.”

11. A Suspicious Duo

11A Suspicious Duo

I split up with Kei and ran down the hall. The security was busy dealing with the panic, so they wouldn’t notice me slip away. I’d staked out a room earlier that seemed relatively unused, and just as I expected, there was no one inside.

In a flash, I changed into my Red costume. Once I put on the earpiece, I could hear Kei call out to me.

“You ready?”

“Yup. How are Misaki and Yuzuki?”

“They’re fine. They both managed to evacuate.”

All right. That means I can focus on this.

“My analysis of the fake Red duo aligns with Kiyose’s. While they’re skilled infiltrators, they don’t have the hacking or phantom-thievery expertise that we do. Because of that, I didn’t think they’d even attempt a heist that required them to make a direct approach, but…”

“Is something wrong?”

It was strange for Kei to stumble over his words.

“It’s nothing—there’s just something on my mind.”

“And that is?”

“It doesn’t matter at the moment. Right now, we need to focus on catching the fake Red. They got away last time because we slipped up.”

“Oh, right. Sorry.”

“I’m not trying to blame you for it or anything. It’s both of our faults. Anyway, let’s work together to make sure it doesn’t happen again, okay?”

“Okay!”

I carefully emerged out of the closet and into the hallway. There were no security guards in sight, but it wouldn’t take long for them to get here. After all, we had the best of the best working for us.

“There are guards coming from the hallway to the right. I want you to head down the left path and make your way into the ceiling.”

Following Kei’s navigation, I went left and found an air vent that would let me get into the ceiling. I could hear the security team’s voices as I did.

“Don’t worry, men. Our security is rock-solid. Red won’t be leaving this building. Just stay calm and stick to the chase!”

If I got caught, they would assume I was the one who stole the gemstone and not the fake Red.

I used a wire to hoist myself up into the ceiling, then waited for the security team to pass by before following Kei’s navigation to a different vent.

I found myself taking a peek through one of the vents below, and what I saw shocked me.

What’s going on?

“I see, so that’s their plan.” Kei knew exactly what was happening just by catching a glimpse through my camera. “We need to move, Asuka! We’re headed somewhere else. I know what their aim is now.”

“Huh?! Not the courtyard? But that was where Rio set up her trap…”

“They know it’s a trap. They took a different route in.”

“What do you? Ah, never mind!”

I almost asked Kei to explain himself, but we didn’t have time for that.

I’ll have to trust Kei for now!

I continued my way through the ventilation system.

“You’re going to hop down from here. You can’t use the vents beyond this point. Be careful.”

“You got it.”

I found a spot where there were no people under the vents and dropped to the floor.

Tap.

Barely making a sound, I landed on the floor below.

“Follow this hallway, and there should be a door at the end of it—that’s our goal.”

“Our goal? Meaning the fake Red will be there?”

“No, they won’t be here yet.”

“What do you mean?”

“They will need to get ready before they can come here.”

There was a door at the end of the hallway.

“That’s the door.”

Following Kei’s directions, I opened the door. Carefully, I looked into the room. It was large and empty. There were no tables or chairs, and there were tall shelves lining its edges.

“Red is gonna come here?”

Yeah, I know they will. Trust me,” Kei declared.

Okay. Then there’s only one thing I need to do.

I need to get ready for the fake Red duo to come!

Clack, clack…

I heard footsteps coming from the other side of the door.

I was hiding quietly behind one of the shelves, waiting for the door to open.

Ka-chak… Creeeak—

I heard the door open, and through it came…two security guards!

The pair of guards walked toward the far end of the room, their sharp eyes scanning the area carefully.

Ah! They’re coming this way!

I could feel my heart beating faster; I put my hand over it to calm myself.

After I made sure I recognized them, I was ready to go.

Tap.

I jumped out behind them, landing with a light sound that made both guards jolt in surprise. They quickly spun around to face me.

“What’re you doing here?” said the smaller of the two security guards.

“You two need something on the roof, fake Reds?” I said with confidence.

“Wh-what do you mean?! You’re the real Phantom Thief Red! We’re gonna catch you!”

“Go ahead, call for backup… I’ll wait.”

The two glared back at me.

“Well, shoot. If the jig is up, no point in fakin’ it anymore!”

They scoffed to themselves before removing their uniform shirts.

And there they were—the fake Red duo.

Just like Kei said!

“How’d ya know we’d be here?” the little one said, putting his fists up for a fight.

“It was easy. You two wouldn’t be able to escape the building without fingerprints, and the courtyard was obviously a trap. The one way for you to get out was the courtyard, so this was the only place left for you to go.”

“So ya figured it out, too,” the little one said with a sour look.

I looked out the window, pointing at the accommodation facility where we had our things.

“The distance between this building and that one is twenty-three feet—except for this spot. The other building has an outdoor stairwell, which sticks out three feet, and this window also protrudes another two feet, making it an eighteen-foot gap. You could attach a rope to the stairs to cross it, especially given how acrobatic you two are.”

The fake Red duo walked back a bit, and I follow their pace by taking a step forward,

“Opening the window could sound an alarm, sure, but you would be well across the gap before any police made it here. And the security for the other building is nothing compared with the museum, so you’d probably have no problem making your escape.”

That’s what Kei told me to say anyway. It also helped that I just so happened to glimpse two security guards knocked unconscious in another room where art was being stored—without their uniforms. So it was easy to picture what they would be wearing.

“Nothing gets by you, huh, Phantom Thief Red? We figured you’d make yer move, too, but we never thought you’d guess our whole plan.”

“It was an obvious plan.”

Well…for Kei, at least.

“I’ll make you return the Red-Hot Crown and the Blue Star!” I said, crouching down in a fighting pose before the fake Red duo.

12. Can We Get It Back?!

12Can We Get It Back?!

I clenched my fist and ran at the fakers.

“Hey!”

The fake Reds were caught off guard by my charge and split up into two directions.

“Whaddaya think yer doin’?!” the little one wailed.

I’m taking back what’s not yours!

I pumped my feet to run even faster, closing right in on the small one.

He wasn’t ready to fight yet, so I took this chance to send a punch toward his stomach.

“Wagh! Oh, no, ya don’t!” The little man twisted and turned, barely avoiding it.

Let’s see you try that again!

I whirled around for a spin kick.

“Youch!”

The little man blocked with both arms, but he was sent back with the impact. I then turned to the larger of the two.

“Wait! S-stop! T-time out!”

“What?” The big guy raised both his arms. “I give up.”

Uh… Huh?

“I give up, so don’t hit me!” He looked like he was about to start crying. “You’re too strong, too fast. Ain’t no way we can beat that.”

“You tell ’er!” the little guy said over to the side, nodding with his hand over his belly.

Wh-what the?! They’re making it seem like I’m the bad guy! You guys are the ones who stole from the museum!

It’s fine, Asuka. They’re giving up, so let’s tie them down,” Kei said seriously, although even he seemed thrown off by the turn of events.

Sigh…

I let out a small sigh in my mind. I’d been so ready for a fight, but they just gave up.

I guess this is probably better than them being too tough, though. It is somewhat of a letdown either way.

I could think about it later. Instead, I used a rope I had ready to tie the two up. They both cooperated.

When I finished, I got up and shot them both a glare.

“Why did you guys fake being me?”

…………”

The little one turned away without saying anything, and the larger one had his mouth tightly shut. Neither of them wanted to talk.

“I’m going to ask you one more time. Why did you claim to be Red for your heists? There has to be a reason.”

I kept glaring at them both.

“We ain’t gonna tell ya honestly either way, so try ’n’ figure it out on yer own,” the little one said, sneering.

Oh? Is that right? So that’s how you’re gonna act in this situation, huh?

“Right… Well, seeing as you’re both so acrobatic, you’ll probably survive a fall from the roof,” I said, grabbing the smaller one and hoisting him up—which was simple, given how light he was.

“H-hold yer horses! Now, let’s not be rash!”

“I’m not holding any horses.” I moved over to the fence on the roof.

“All right! Al; right! I’ll talk! I’ll talk!” the little one screamed, and I plopped him back down. “Ow, ow, ow! You could be a li’l nicer… How’re ya so strong anyhow?!”

“Wanna say that again?” I shot him another glare, and he shrank in on himself a little. “So? Why?”

The little one didn’t look like he was going to talk, so the bigger one answered for him.

“It was that smug magician.”

A smug magician?

Wait… I’ve heard that before…

“What was that doggone name again? Fantatister?” the big one continued, unable to recall completely.

“Hey! If yer gonna say it, git it right! It’s Fantasista!” the little one blurted out.

“Ah! That’s it! Fantasista!”

F-Fantasista?! W-wait! Why do these two know about him?!

“I knew it…”

Image - 17

“You did?! You mean you thought he might be behind this?!”

“Yes, because these two were able to re-create our card so accurately. Also, from how quickly they were able to get in and out of places—Fantasista being involved makes sense. These two definitely don’t seem like the type that can figure out routes like these.”

“That’s true—they definitely don’t look the type.”

“And no matter what they stand to earn from success, I doubt these two would ever take on a heist as risky as this one. This tells me that someone else is the brains behind their operation, someone they know they can trust. That person wanted them to act as Red…and the only person I could think of who would want to do that is the magician.”

Fantasista! So it was you all along! You made these two pretend to be a fake Red.

“But why listen to him in the first place?”

“You’ll have to ask them.”

Oh, right.

I looked to the fake Red duo.

“You two. Why would you follow Fantasista’s orders like this?”

“Hmph! You wouldn’t consider it if the great Phantom Thief Fantasista came to ya?”

You literally just forgot his name, though?

I kept myself from snarking and waited for my answer.

“He said he’d take care of all the plannin’—and pay us handsomely for it, to boot. That’s an offer ya can’t refuse.”

So it was all for money. Either way, why would Fantasista want to do this?

“Didn’t he want us to say somethin’ to her?” the taller one said, jabbing the smaller one with his elbow (as best he could).

“Ah, right! He had a message for ya. Fantasista says, ‘Hope this was fun enough for ya. Wouldn’t want ya gettin’ too comfy while I’m gone.’ Somethin’ like that.”

“What?! That dirty rotten thief… So he did all this to mess with us?! I guess it kind of checks out, but why?!”

“He just wants to have fun, I guess.”

Ugh… He did say that.

Fantasista said he stole to put on a show—what a joke. Although, going this far to play a trick on us did seem like something he would do.

There’s no use getting so upset over someone who’s not even here right now, so I’ll just have to save a knuckle sandwich for him for the next time we meet.

I went in front of the two fake Reds and held out my hand.

“Now, give back the Red-Hot Crown and the Blue Star.”

The smaller of the two took a second to find his words before eventually sighing.

“Fine, ya win. It’s in here.”

With his eyes, he motioned to a pouch on his waist. Slowly, I bent down next to him and opened it up. Inside, each wrapped in cloth, was the Red-Hot Crown and the Blue Star.

I took them out, then stepped back to give them a better look.

I had a red ruby in one hand, and a blue sapphire in the other.

“Oh? This was a lot easier than I anticipated.”

I expected them lie about not having it or hiding it somewhere.

“Yeah, ya think?”

Hmm?

The smaller one’s tone changed; he suddenly seemed awfully full of himself.

I looked straight at him. He was looking down, but then he looked up—with a big smile on his face.

“’Cause they’re fake.”

As soon as he said this, the ruby and the sapphire in my hands started to crackle—just before a big flash-bang went off.

13. Where’d the Real Ones Go?

13Where’d the Real Ones Go?

I squatted down, covering my face, and the little one smugly addressed me.

“…Can’t yap no more, huh? Sorry ’bout that. Your vision will come back soon enough.”

“We’ll be long gone before then, though.”

I could head the sound of the rope I tied around them falling to the floor.

But then—

“Oh? You guys are good at undoing ropes.”

“?!”

—the two of them turned around to find me getting up.

I was wearing my sunglasses. Normally, I used these for their night vision, but that was turned off, so they were just regular sunglasses.

“I’m fine, thanks to these.”

“I can’t believe you figured it out so fast on your own.”

“Heh. That was thanks to Rio.”

“Kiyose?”

“When she brought me to her house, she gave me the chance to hold the Red-Hot Crown, so I can still remember how heavy it was.”

“Ah, I see. So when you took their gemstones, you knew they were fakes due to their weight. What about the flash-bang?”

“I didn’t see that coming—I just guessed there would be something more to the fakes, so I was ready to move when it kicked off.”

“So it was pure instinct…”

“Well…yeah… I mean, it’s not like I had time to ask you, so I just pretended their trick worked.”

“I’m impressed. All right, now…”

“…it’s our turn!”

I got down low in a fighting stance.

“What the heck is goin’ on? This ain’t how this was s’posed to go at all…”

The fake Reds backed up.

“I’m not gonna let you get away.”

“Aw, shoot. If it’s a fight ya want, it’s a fight yer gonna get, y’hear?!”

The fake Reds both put their hands up, ready to tussle.

Looks like they’re finally ready to go. I’m not gonna let you get any cheap shots off this time!

TAP.

I kicked off the ground and rushed at them. I stayed low to the ground and went for the little one first with a punch.

“Hey! That was close!”

The two of them stepped to the right and left, and my fist only caught air.

“Try this on for size!”

The little one and the big one both came at me from either side, each unleashing a spinning kick.

Whoa, wait!

I blocked the kick coming from my front with my hands, but the kick from behind hit me in the back, sending me forward.

“Owwww!”

The spot where I got kicked was throbbing with pain.

Those two! They’re so hard to fight!!

“We used to be synchronized swimmers!” said the bigger one.

“She ain’t gonna know that’s a joke, ya doofus!” the little one teasingly corrected him.

Their comedy routine always takes me out of the fight, but I know I can’t let my guard down.

“Who wants seconds?! Hup!”

The little one chucked a small ball at me.

What is that?

I moved my head to the side to dodge it.

Image - 18

BOOM!

The ball flew past me. It burst as it hit the ground, and smoke came erupting out of it.

A smoke bomb! Oh no! This was their goal the entire time! They’re gonna try to run again!

In a split-second decision, I rushed toward the window, but when I did, I felt my right shin get caught on something.

“Whoa! Oops.”

I managed to catch my balance before falling over, but a fist came flying out of the smoke in my direction. I turned my head away, just barely managing to dodge.

SHWISH.

I could hear it rush past my ear.

C’mon!

I unleashed a kick toward where the attack came from, but all I caught was smoke.

Geez!

I couldn’t see anything through all the smoke.

“Whatcha doin’, li’l missy? Ain’t no one over there.”

I heard the little one call out to me. I faced the direction his voice came from, but I didn’t find anyone.

Where is he? What’s going on?

Squinting, I searched around harder.

“Over here.”

The next instant, I felt a heavy thud on my back.

“Wagh!”

It was the big one—he sent me flying forward by bumping into me with his belly.

Ouch…

I snapped back up in an instant. The attack itself wasn’t that powerful; I could probably take two or even three more. The issue was the damage was slowly beginning to chip away at me.

And the smoke was even more of an issue. It didn’t take long for the entire room to be filled with it, and it was keeping me from seeing any of their movements.

How, though? How can they see me? Shouldn’t the smoke be blocking their vision, too?

Thinking about it didn’t give me any answers, and standing still wasn’t doing me any favors.

I kicked off the ground, searching wildly for either of the fake Reds.

“Guh!”

Another kick came flying out of the smoke, but I managed to block it with my arms just in the nick of time.

Almost simultaneously, however, another punch came flying from the other side. I managed to dodge this just barely by leaping backward.

Every strike was a sneak attack, so I needed to stay focused. It didn’t help that they were all coming from two very coordinated people.

All right! Let’s try something new!

I stood in place, ready for the next attack to come.

“Oh-ho-ho? You gonna give up?” one of them said, but I didn’t answer.

Just gotta stay still.

But for some reason, they stopped moving, too.

Gotta stay focused.

Huff…

I let out a deep breath, and in the next instant, a punch came flying toward me from my right.

Now! That’s what I’ve been waiting for!

Instead of defending myself, I kicked toward where the attack was coming from.

I was going to take some damage and deal some damage at the same time!

But…

“Guh!”

…the punch landed on my right rib, knocking the air out of me.

“Whoopsie daisy!”

And my kick whiffed through the air.

Did I miss?!

Getting hit first must have thrown me off.

“Whoo-whee! That was a close one! You’re one crazy girl, you know that?”

What else am I supposed to do?!

“Letting down your guard ain’t a good idea. Let’s see how many quick hits you can take.”

Ugh… He’s right. I left my ribs wide-open; that hurt like heck.

I could still move, but I wouldn’t be able to take many more of those.

But it was the only idea I could come up with…

“Can you hear me, Asuka?”

“Kei! Yeah.”

“I figured out how they’re finding you through the smoke.”

“Really?!”

“Yes, it’s simple: sound.”

“Sound?”

“They can hear your footsteps and your breathing. Judging by how they are reacting to when you move, it’s the only explanation. You saw how they stopped talking when you stopped moving earlier, right? It’s because they were listening for your feet.”

“Oh, yeah… There was a pause in their attacks earlier. So that’s been their trick this entire time.”

“So your plan from before was a good one. If you’re going to make a counterattack, you need to focus on dodging first.”

“I mean, if I can actually avoid anything… Oh! I see what you mean!”

“Can you do it?”

“You bet I can!”

Knowing their trick made it easy.

I got down in my fighting pose, purposefully taking a step.

Now the real fight begins!

I listened.

Shwish!

I heard the faint sound of the air being cut.

My right!

I listened closely, and a middle kick cut through the smoke toward me. I moved my upper body slightly back, dodging the blow by a hair. The same went for the low kick that came after from behind—I managed to pull my legs up and avoid it.

“What the—?!”

I could hear their shock.

When I didn’t know what was coming, I used big movements to try and avoid their attacks, but figuring out their direction first allowed me to move a little less.

And now I knew where the two were when I saw their legs! I stepped toward their direction.

“Get ready for this!” I threw a right punch with all my might.

“Gragh!!”

Yeah, that one hit! Whoo! Just one more.

Hearing the faintest of footsteps still moving, I snapped quickly back to the left to find the bigger man with his eyes wide-open. Before he could do anything, I karate chopped him in the neck.

He tumbled over onto the floor, knocked out cold.

“Whew. It’s over.”

“It is.”

“Yup! Now we just need to find the Red-Hot Crown and Blue Star and put them back.”

The smoke was beginning to clear, and the first thing I could see was the little one, sprawled out on the floor. The bigger one was folded over next to him, completely unconscious.

I walked over to the little guy, who was still somewhat awake.

“Hey, where’s the real Red-Hot Crown and Blue Star?”

The little one looked down, before slumping his shoulders and reaching into his pockets.

“Here,” he said with bated breath, tossing out two gemstones.

Thud.

He turned his hands over, and the two heavy gemstones fell into the palms of each of mine. The red and blue gemstones glistened in their respective colors.

Yeah! These are the real deal. The Red-Hot Crown is the same weight as the one Rio let me hold.

“Asuka, the security team has picked up on the commotion and are en route now.”

Image - 19

What?!

That’s not good!

“Red!!”

The door came flying open, and Rio, along with a group of security guards, came storming in.

I managed to hide myself behind one of the shelves in the very last moment, leaving only the two fake Reds behind for Rio and the security team.

“Look! It must be these two! They stole the Red-Hot Crown!”

The security team rushed the duo, holding them down. Not that it was difficult to do—the two didn’t have the energy or will to fight, so they went easy.

“Who are you two?” Rio said, taking the red card that’d been peeking from a breast pocket of the taller one’s uniform. The card had Red’s famous pattern on it.

“‘Sorry for the commotion. I’ve left these two fake Phantom Thief Reds behind for you. I will return what they stole soon’—Phantom Thief Red!!” Rio read the card out loud before looking around herself. “Ah! If I hadn’t been out there with the crowd, I would’ve been able to see the real Phantom Thief Red!!”

She glared up at the ceiling out of frustration at first, but then her expression softened into something happier.

“I knew Red was still the Phantom Thief Red I adore!” she shouted with a brilliant smile.

I watched her as I quietly tiptoed away, careful not to be seen.

14. The Phantom Thief Club Will Live On

14The Phantom Thief Club Will Live On

It was the morning of the next day. I turned on the TV, and the news was talking about what had happened the previous day. On the upper right-hand corner of the screen, there was a headline that said The Fake Red, Caught Red-Handed! in big letters.

“Last night, police released a statement confirming that the recently stolen paintings and the gemstone known as the Blue Star, initially believed to have been taken by Phantom Thief Red, were in fact stolen by a pair of impostors. The motive behind the impostor’s use of Phantom Thief Red’s identity remains unclear and is currently under investigation.”

The screen then changed to show Rio, wearing our school’s uniform.

“I knew it was a fake all along. That was why I wanted to set a trap in such a public way.”

There were reporters and journalists holding out microphones and recorders for Rio to speak into.

“But there was no reason to doubt that the thief was real at the time.”

Rio glared at the reporter, who flinched in response and backed up a bit.

“Do you honestly think Phantom Thief Red would do something like this? I have a harder time believing everyone would be so convinced that it wasn’t an impostor. There was almost no evidence.”

None of the reporters could say anything in response. They were the ones who’d reported that Phantom Thief Red had a change of heart and started to steal for their own personal gain, after all.

“Although, it appears that I wasn’t the only one who thought that.”

“Detective Hibiki Shirasato was convinced it was a fake as well. When I reached out to him about capturing the impostors, he just said that Red could take care of it.”

The reporters started murmuring among themselves. I heard someone say, “Can someone go confirm that?” before I turned off the TV.

Mm-hmm. Everything’s back to normal now. Welp! Time for school!

It was lunchtime. I was eating with Misaki and Yuzuki, when the hallway, which was bustling with students, suddenly grew quiet.

Hmm? This feels familiar…

“Is Asuka here?”

It was Rio, Daiki, and Kento. Everyone made some space, particularly for Daiki because he was so big.

“Yeah! I’ll be right back…”

I let Misaki and Yuzuki know I was going to go really quick.

“Yup. Tell us more about yesterday when you return.”

“Of course!” I said, before heading over to Rio and the others. They were waiting at the door, but we decided to move into the hallway so we didn’t block it.

“I saw you on the news this morning! You were answering all the questions.”

“Yeah…”

Oh?

Rio seemed a bit down.

“Is something the matter?”

…………”

Rio didn’t say anything.

“Oh, you know. She’s upset because she was so close to Phantom Thief Red yet so far away,” Daiki said, answering for her with a bit of a wry smile.

Ah, yeah. That makes sense for Rio.

“We were in the same darn building,” Rio said, her shoulders slumped. She was a shadow of her usual energetic self.

It’s almost like she’s sick or something…

“We’ve already explained to her that it isn’t as if Red will show himself in the first place,” Kento said with a troubled look.

Mmmm. I want to help cheer her up.

Kei said this, too, but it was thanks to her that we even had a chance to catch the fake Red in the first place. If she hadn’t sent out that public challenge, then those two may very well still be on the loose.

So the last thing I want to do is let Rio be down in the dumps about it.

“B-but I’m sure the real Red is really grateful that the phony was finally caught…”

I tried planting the idea in her head, but Rio’s eyes stayed fixed to the ground as she sulked. My suggestion must’ve had no effect—or so I thought, until…

“You really think so?” She perked up.

“Y-yeah!” I nodded vigorously. “I’m sure they are! You helped out so much!”

I tried to be really emphatic about it.

“It was thanks to the public challenge that the fake Red came out from hiding in the first place. I bet— No, I’m sure they’re thankful for it!”

I watched her usually happy expression slowly return to her face.

“You know what—you’re right! You could say, it was my way of paying him back!” she said with her usual energy.

You did, Rio. More than you’ll ever know. I just wish I could tell you that.

“It isn’t enough, though. I still owe him so much!” she said, holding a clenched fist out.

Oh?

““Sounds about right,”” Daiki and Kento said a little wryly, though you could clearly tell they were glad to see her back to her normal self.

“We’re gonna keep following Red’s activity!”

Ha-ha-ha…

Looks like the Phantom Thief Club will live on. She really did more than she ever could to repay us, though…

Honestly, the fact that our work is making people happy is reward enough.

Hmm?

I realized that Kei was nearby. When I glanced over at him, his eyes squinted as he smiled slightly. He was looking at Rio and the others.

He probably feels the same way. No matter what the dangeris, if we can make people this happy, it’s worth it.

I’m glad to be Phantom Thief Red.

“Ah, right, guys! We’ve got some work to do. First, let’s collect the facts on this case! Asuka, come help us,” Rio said cheerily. Her excitement was contagious, because I had a big smile on my face, too.

“Yeah! You got it!”

I gave a big nod.

Afterword

Afterword

Hello there! This is the author of Phantom Thief Red, Shin Akigi.

This volume featured a fake Phantom Thief Red. The Red brand must be pretty famous now for there to be a fake… Although, they were hardly like the real deal.

Now that you’ve seen the phonies for who they are after reading this volume, let’s bring back our character interviews to see what they thought about them!

With that said, today’s interview will be with the muscle and executor of Phantom Thief Red’s operation (and kind of an animal in Kei’s opinion)—Asuka!

“Hey, guys! Wait a second, this introduction sounds insulting…”

No, no, no! Not at all! Kei is the one who thinks it.

“What did you just say?”

You know what, never mind… (I mean, you look like a lion staring at its prey right now…)

Okay, so the reason I wanted to interview you today was to ask what it takes to be a phantom thief like you.

What do you do for practice?

“Hmm, nothing in particular, really. I guess climbing buildings without ropes and sparring with my dad.”

Hmm, that sounds pretty particular, actually… What about something regular people can do?

“Regular people? Let me think… Wait, you made it sound like I’m not a regular person?”

I mean, you’re not! No regular person could be Phantom Thief Red, after all!

“I guess… Somehow, it feels like you’re just making it sound nice…”

You might be overthinking it. So, have any ideas?

“Let’s see… Jogging, maybe?”

That is pretty regular.

“It’s important to stay in shape, after all. Phantom thievery requires stamina every step of the way; you can’t do anything when you’re really out of breath. When it comes to stamina, you want to do a lot of eating and exercising!”

You definitely eat a lot.

“I’m my happiest when it’s mealtime! I only accepted this interview because you agreed to take me out for steak tonight!”

Yeah… Of course.

(Steak… My wallet hurts already…)

“What’s wrong? Why did you just peek into your wallet?”

Oh! It’s nothing!

Let’s finish off with a message for the readers.

“Kei and I are going to keep working hard as Phantom Thief Red, so please keep cheering us on!”

Thank you!

(I can already hear her stomach rumbling as she leaves the interview… I hope I’ll have enough to cover tonight’s bill.)

Now, then!

Today’s interview is a little special, because we have one more guest!

It is the rival of Phantom Thief Red, the Middle School Detective, Hibiki Shirasato.

“Hello. I heard you would be interviewing me today.”

Yes, I will be!

(A simple interviewer… That’s what I am. Definitely not the author…)

So how did you become a detective?

“It just happened, really. I come from a long line of police officers, so they were always talking about cases at home. I’ve been interested in them ever since I was little…”

Ah, yes. You solved the Hanasato case when you were an elementary school student.

“How do you know that?”

Huh? Oh, uh, well…rumors…

(Whew, that was close. It might’ve been a problem if he figured out my identity.)

Let’s change the subject. What do you need to become a detective?

“What do I need? You need to always remain calm and never give up.”

Oh… That’s not what I expected to hear. I was expecting something along the lines of “an analytic mind” or “observational skills.”

“Yes, those are both important as well, but even the brightest brain and the sharpest eyes aren’t useful if the person can’t keep their nerves under control.”

Yes, yes. What do you mean by “never giving up,” exactly?

“When the detective gives up, it means the case will go unsolved. It means that the people hurt by the crime will never get closure. To never give up means to pursue a case no matter how difficult it may seem.”

Ah! But being a detective does mean you need to use your head, right? Like when you solve secret messages.

“Yes, indeed. How about I leave you with a secret message?”

A secret message from Hibiki! Sounds interesting—let’s hear it.

“It’s u;kkfwrtiymews.”

Wh-what am I looking it? I have no idea what it’s supposed to mean…

“I’ll give you a hint: left.”

But what does that? And there he goes.

“Left”? That’s his hint?

Hmm, I have no idea what it’s supposed to mean.

Something tells me this is going to keep me up at night like Kei’s riddle did.

But yeah, Hibiki never gives up.

Sounds to me like Phantom Thief Red is going to hear more from him.

Though, I’m sure Red will pull through somehow!

And finally, Asuka did some pretty dangerous things this volume, so make sure not to try and do it at home, okay?

For now, though, I’ll be seeing you next time!

Shin Akigi
